UK Leaves the EU - What happens next?

Interesting thoughts coming out of Australia ...

ends on the fear that if France go further to the right and elect Marine Le Pen, could make the continent unstable considering her "admiration" for Putin (and the 11 million Euro bank loans!)

Considering the Panama Papers Putin links never lead to him, but to well known people that could be associated with him....and that they didn't name ANY prominent Americans...which nation (Russia or America) do you consider to be the greater threat to world peace?

Did anyone here have any referendum arguments with their family? It did occur to me that the timing of the vote - in the week after Fathers Day - might be unfortunate for family relations up and down the country. :D

(Mine were Brexiteers and we managed to navigate the common ground and avoid it - just!)

No, fortunately (Christmas is saved!) Mine were all as aghast as me, though they showed less stamina by popping off to bed in the middle of the night whereas I stayed up to watch the full grimness of the counts being reported.

Have to say, I am 100% behind keeping Farage out of any sort of Brexit negotiation role. Watching the video of him speak in the European Parliament today, I was embarrassed for him.

The man doesn't have a diplomatic bone in his body. He's totally unable to be humble - completely obnoxious.

It's no wonder MEPs don't have much time for the UK when they have to put up with his crap.

Not entirely sure if this funny or just plain bad.

One of the girls I know, thought Nigel Farage were a comedian like Al Murrays pub landlord after the Thanet thing. She seriously thought farage were a joke character. I guess it says it all, about both farage and how involved most of this country are in politics.

I kinda hope most of europe think the same :)

I found myself just watching the bemused (and offended) faces of those around him.

Racial attacks stepped up to a completely different and chilling level

How is that stepped up? Is arson something new? This sort of thing was happening before the EuRef.

You mean the results of a democratic election? That at least 17 million are very happy with? If I say I have to read the full grimness of your posts I'll get a ban. But then people would say I don't have to read them..... and you don't have to write them either.

Amazing how you can get banned from here for saying someone has no idea, yet we can be continually bombarded with derogatory and pessimistic annotations and nothing happens.

See you all soon :)

Volume, that should have been obvious to you.

Personal attacks and being belligerent are not even close to the same thing as reporting headlines with a personal comment. It's not difficult but if you are struggling with it, stop reading the thread.

Considering the Panama Papers Putin links never lead to him, but to well known people that could be associated with him....and that they didn't name ANY prominent Americans...which nation (Russia or America) do you consider to be the greater threat to world peace?

Looking at Russia and what they have done in the Crimea, Ukraine, they clearly have an overt agenda. Is it the founding of the New Soviet Union? It is no secret that Russia despises the EU, and whether you like or dislike the EU, it is not hard to believe that Russia would be supportive of seeing the project fail.

Greatest threat to world peace - Humanity, we are so clearly not yet evolved enough to live together.
But in the terms of your question, between Russia and the USA, I would say Russia. The reason would be that the USA has more accountability, though they are by no means perfect.

So ...

The Conservatives elect right wing leave campaign leader and cabinet.
Labour keep Corbyn.

Disaffected Conservative and Labour MPs consult with their constituency members, and "defect" to form a new centre soft left party.

If we can't get proportional representation, perhaps a future with permanent coalition governments is the answer ...

I was seriously thinking of applying for UK citizenship in the event of a certain U.S. presidential outcome. This, however, gives me pause:

The overwhelming UK population completely abhor these acts by a very small group of people. I won't even give them a political label, as what they are doing has nothing to do with politics - it is to do with ignorance and fear.

Yes, hate crime figures have gone up. What can be done / what will happen? The situation will calm down. The vast majority of people will rally round and offer support and understanding ...

Not sure who you are rooting for but this may either be good or bad news ...

This survey of voter preference (between the two likely front-runners for leader of the Conservative party) from the Guardian live blog was interesting.

(There's no suggestion that Lab/Lib Dem/UKIP voters would actually vote Conservative - they were just asked which of the two choices they preferred)

There's historically been a lot of bad-mouthing of bankers (not necessarily unfairly, when viewed through the prism of the 2008 crash). But setting aside whether they should be tolerated or vilified, what will be the consequences if they start to leave the City?

Here's how much it will cost the UK if bankers start quitting the City following Brexit
HSBC has already said it plans to move 1,000 bankers to Paris. Many other banks have similar plans. The capital markets think-tank New Financial has calculated that every 1,000 bankers who depart these shores would cost the UK government about £100m a year in lost tax revenue and £325m in lost output based on average pay (and therefore tax revenue). This doesn’t include the spending power that would be sucked out of the economy.

You could also see this as a bonus...

£100m and £325m adds up to not much over a week's EU payment doesn't it? As long as we don't have more than 52,000 leave we're in credit and shot of these nasty bankers that cost us shed loads in bailouts :)

runs away quickly...

Can I ask then, what is the problem with me questioning the language that is used as a 'personal comment' in a 'public forum' 'that is for debating'?

Seems every time I say anything towards E.. another member :) I have you breathing down my neck either on the thread or in conversation. Whereas different members take it in their stride. I really don't get why those who question others, are being vindicated.

You would be jumping up and down at me, as that, could well be considered a person attack.

Have a nice day :)

It is no secret that Russia despises the EU, and whether you like or dislike the EU, it is not hard to believe that Russia would be supportive of seeing the project fail.

The troubles in Ukraine were started and are funded by the EU (mainly Germany) and the US to weaken Russia...hence the EU sanctions. Russia has stated it wants to begin trading with the UK since the referendum.

Greatest threat to world peace - Humanity, we are so clearly not yet evolved enough to live together.
But in the terms of your question, between Russia and the USA, I would say Russia. The reason would be that the USA has more accountability, though they are by no means perfect.

The US has 660+ military bases in foreign lands - Russia 12 (in territories that used to be part of the Soviet Union).
The US spends 54% of its annual budget on the military (9 times more than they do on education).
The US military spend is more than China, Russia, UK, Japan, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Germany and France combined.
The US and EU allies are in Syria illegally - Russia are there by invitation of the sovereign nation.
I don't see any accountability from the US.

And we get told that Russia is the aggressor? What's wrong with that picture...

The UK can get the drop on the EU countries by restarting trade with Russia asap.

Have you seen how VP deals with owners of a factory that have been ripping people off? :)
