The new Real Time DAC

Just like New Labour and the Unions, Nominet focus is shifting, they don't want to be seen as serving just its membership. To a point, that's fine. How you take that is a different matter!

One thing not to serve membership, another to blank them entirely and make everything more difficult. Just put fees up to one million a year, will take less longer and will make them look like the power crazy, money chasing people that they are. I'm money chasing as well, and maybe power crazy.

dropcatchers are not the entire membership and these new terms do help some members.

Conversely you can understand the arguement of a large ISP with say a million .uk's who wants to maintain their databases (!) , offer lots of real time whois look ups to potential clients, and *then* do dropcatching but cant under the same quota as you :)

The thing is how to balance those needs without making things unbalanced in the releasing and re-registration of expired domains.

There is an interesting discussion on the subject over on Nom-steer at the moment, but the anti-aftermarket types seem to be fixated on trademark infringements etc., which is annoying and frustrating.

Michelle, Ironically I think it's one of the few times I have seen Nom-Steer be progressive.

Looks like a few people are concerned regarding this one.

I cant seem to access Nom-Steer. I subscribed to it last night via my membership account.

Is anyone else having problems or am i just being stupid.

You're only saying that because I actually agree with you this time :)

And would you please get my name right - last time I checked I hadn't had a sex change :)

Yes. I suspect a lot of the companies that offer brand protection / domain portfolio management services would be concerned with the implications of this sort of change.

As I mentioned on nom-steer, droplists are a very handy way of getting good generic names that can compliment a brands online strategy. I actively promote the deleted list of IE domains to developers etc., as a lot of them pick up good dropped names there. Being able to do so if it works for our business model (whatever that maybe) should be allowed to continue

And of course there's a big difference between a drop list (with domains and maybe dates) and a list of WHOIS data (with domains, registrants and addresses). A very big difference.

You have to post from the email address you subscribed with..

For example if you subscribed via [email protected] your sending email address must be [email protected]

I spent 6 months trying to remember what mine was, couldn't post or unsubscribe.... oh that was painful.

Exactly :)

I'd love to know what people like tagnames thinks.

I think you'll be holding your breath on that one. I've yet to see any of the old boys raise their heads over the parapet for any of the issues of the past couple of years... just the same faces.

It says you compile, what if you already have the data but are verifying? (an example raised above) I guess we need one of those clever legal types to confirm the situation and wording as to exactly what can be done with the data we have already compiled ourselves over the years.

If you have more than 1000 domain names on your own tag, is it against the above T&C to use the DAC to synchronise your local database of domain names, and related information, that you are the Registrar for with Nominet's Registry?

Surely plenty of us here have more than 1,000 domains on our tag. Has anyone put this question to Nominet yet?

I'll drop an email tomorrow and let you know if I hear back.

It's being debated on nom-steer at the moment and the right person in Nominet's senior management has been BCC'ed in for added bonus! ;)

Excellent - given what it says on Nominet's website...

We listen, can be trusted and relied upon to do the right thing

... I will now sleep soundly after having worried about this for a few days

Sounds promising, if anyone can PM me the email address of the right person in Nominet i'll send my email direct ;)

I've spotted a typo in the DAC T&Cs:

Clearly it should say "Real" and not "Read".

Can someone at Nominet please send me a biscuit :D

It's now been changed - I'll be looking out in tomorrow's post for my biscuit, I hope it's a chocolate one ...

I wouldn't bother mate, they never reply. The can't even be bothered to reply on Nom-Steer, even to say "we are looking into it".

They are too busy spending their 200k a year....

I asked the question and the reply was:

"With regards to maintaining domain names on your tag however, full details regarding any domain names on your tag can be obtained through the Automaton's query, list or bulk operations."
