I have two TAGs on the same Nominet account one for business purposes and one for my personal names (typically surname related). I have applied for the self managed TAG for my business one and now it says I can't apply for the other one because I am only allowed one.

Do I need to do anything e.g move personal ones to my business TAG now or will it all sort it out once approved?

Confused.....

Dave

I have two TAGs too, but moved all names registered to me to one TAG before applying (approved yesterday).

You can move any names registered to you to your self-managed TAG at any time, before or after approval.

"Domain names must usually be registered in the name of the Registrar. You may specify a maximum of five linked Registrant names at any one time. These must be linked to you in some way, for example personal, trading or business names that you use or are closely connected with, and you must be able to provide evidence of this if we ask for it."

Time for change

A group of us should join forces to build a new awesome .uk registrar at ridiculously cheap prices, to entice premium domain holders to move over to our new registrar.... ;)

Could not agree more strongly!

Regarding the free transfers, will this only be between accredited and self managed tags, or as a self managed tag holder will I now be able to buy .uk domain names from anyone without paying a fee to transfer to me?

I don't think the destination is important. But only accredited and self managed tags can send the transfer for free. I'm assuming most of the BIG boys will go accredited most others here will have a self managed TAG so I'm guessing 95% of the domains you buy should be fee free assuming the big guys don't charge themselves.

From Nominet:

Self Managed

"You may transfer domain names on a Self Managed tag to a new Registrant free of charge."

Accredited Channel Partner

"On behalf of your customers you may transfer domain names to a new Registrant free of charge."

Not sure how the latter will work unless all customers who use Accredited Channel Partners automatically receive free transfers from Accredited Channel Partner TAGs.

In web domain manger choose manage domains on the row of buttons to create, modify, renew etc. the transfer button is at the end of the row

Ah I see it, great thanks.

Will be good for buying/selling the cheaper domains on here and not having to fork out the extra £12

Here is where the transfer button is folks:

To anyone who didn't realise, the new free transfers are only for on your own TAG, you can't transfer to a registrant on another tag, you will have to create a new registrant with the email on your tag and then they have to do a tag change to get it onto their registrar!

Hope that made sense, in a rush lol

Just doing my first free transfer.

It's now the seller who fills in the new Registrant details so the onus is on the seller to collect that information and make sure it is correct. I'm sure there will be instances when I'd rather pay the £12!

If it's a decent xxx+ sale to an end user who I can't be bothered to explain why I need their details and about the tag change I think I would rather just pay £12 for them.

I think I'll be doing the same, but wanted to try out the new system.

Doesn't seem to ask about TAG change - or maybe that's on the confirmation page.

Still waiting to confirm exact details so haven't reached the last page - lots of buyers want completely different info on the whois so want to get it right.

From the above, looks like I'll keep paying the £12 for non domainer sales. The risk of spooking a buyer before they pay by making things too complicated is not worth gambling on for that small amount. But for Domainlore etc free sound great!

I plan to use this to my advantage by giving added confidence to buyers.

Some potential buyers want to know that if they pay their money the name will be transferred into their name. By asking for the information that they want to appear in the Registrant's details, you are telling them straight away that, yes, the name will be transferred completely over.

I'm planning on creating a form similar to the one on the Nominet site, asking for the information that is required.

And of course, you can ask for the above to be completed after payment is received so no risk of spooking.

Yep. I gave a very short answer (paraphrased: "We don't have customers") so we'll see if that's enough to satisfy Nominet.

They were OK with that then, presumably?

Thanks,
Rob

@ Rob F, I wrote something like, "This tag is for my own personal use, I don't have customers and have no plans to have any in the future".

Heard back from Nominet today and my tag is now a self managed tag, confirmation email reads:

Thank you for applying for a Self-Managed tag. We have now processed your application and I can confirm that your xxxxx-xx tag is now classified as Self-Managed.

You can now make use of the free Registrant transfer benefit available to Self-Managed tag holders in accordance with the requirements set out in the Registrar Agreement for Self-Managed tags.
