Then by all means give me a 2 minute run down of how an end user makes a success of a 5 word domain like 15yearinterestonlymortgage.uk

What would that achieve ?
I would not register it, nor I suspect would anyone else.
But if they can see or feel something I can't ,who am I to judge.

We live in a changing world ( is that an understatement ) and what fits today may not fit tomorrow, so we have to be astute in what we invest in and meet with triumph and disaster equally.

You're saying I'm wrong. So I'm saying okay show me why I'm wrong, tell me how I can make money from a domain like that. Surely thats fair? If you can't or won't do that, I'll just need to assume you're part of edwins EMD cheerleading crew.

You are asking me to evaluate a name which I would never register and which is not registered to my knowledge.

Assume what you will.

This is one of the greatest Acorn threads I can remember.. :)

No there have been a couple with monkey, he's like a slippery eel, or I think someone once said a drunken monkey ( not meant in a derogatory sense). I think it's how he gets his fun.

Bit naughty with the Edwin thing though, but I suspected there was an axe being ground early on.

But to be fair, most of what his said is correct. Not sure how many domains you sell now, but personally for me and from what I gather from the market, brandables are way way way ahead..

I'm giving serious thought to buying SlipperyEel.com from buydomains. I love it.

Define brandable ?

I don't have anything against Edwin personally - I've never bought or sold anything to or from him.

Its the business model (which is used by multiple other members here) that I have an issue with.

Because its near identical to the domains Edwin is asking more than £1k for, and you're saying I'm wrong for slating them.

Yet on the other hand you're saying you won't even register another domain that is effectively the same thing.

You need to pick or choose which of the above you're going with, you can't have them both.

I can't easily recall ever registering a name with more than 3 words in it.
Not for reasons being pointed out on this site but because the longer the domain is the more permutations exist to replicate it.

I believe most short domains are potentially brandable ( though what is brandable is subjective )

When the domains in question are 5 word emd's for one very specific product, there is no possibility of anyone but an affiliate developing it. They are completely unsuitable for end users.

In which case an end user won't buy it and neither will any get-rich-quick affiliate marketer that has half a brain! So it won't sell.

However, if an end user likes the domain for whatever reason and they haven't been told by the seller that it will bring them untold riches, it's their choice to buy it, develop a website on it and promote it in the way they see fit for their business.

Is Edwin forcing people to buy domains somewhere and I've missed it? If so I'll shut up!!

Define brandable ?

Almost any single word could be brandable, and many word pairs - as long as they are not used descriptively (that is, as a generic).

Apple, Orange, Blackberry are all great brand names, but none of them sell fruit.

So Drink could be a brand name (though I struggle to think of what off hand), but it is a crap name for a drink.

Great way of putting it!

If you promise not to duck and dive. This is my view.
One company that I know of owns 500,000 domains ,why, you would have to ask them, but that is their prerogative.
I have always maintained that people should only buy/register quality domains that they are prepared to develop or hold for the long term.
That has been my strategy, I can't judge others who have a different strategy no more than I judge you for yours.

Coca-Cola is a brand, arguably booze could become a brand but drink is a dull emotionless word, why on earth would you they call themselves Drink.

Gosh, wouldn't it be daft for a chain of cafes to call themselves Eat?
