Deleting.co.uk RIP

Thanks guys for your support (and Nominet if you're reading this NO i'm not instigating complaints) it is called being polite. My only fear now is they will issue some kind of press release about it and then it will hit the main news websites, damaging my own reputation further. I can see the headlines now "PAB member breaches Nominet contract" when they actually got me on a technicality after they have known about it for 4 years.

You also have to remember there are a lot of stakeholders/members that are against "dropcatching/domaining" in any form.

Shut down a guys business in hours.

Not even the VAT man is that ruthless.

Even more underhand if they do a press release to damage your reputation further.

That is what interests me... it is hardly as though it was a secret project - you plastered the URL all over Nom-steer and the like.

I hope that other nominet investigations are not equally delayed :)

A sincere 'thank you' like all the other posts for a FANTASTIC service - I will sorely miss it......However perhaps now's the time to challenge ......I'm happy to throw cash into a 'fighting fund' to provoke a rethink from Nom on this. How do others feel ? - 'savedeleting.co.uk' anyone ?

I'm just guessing Andrew, but it may be some of the newer features that have constituted "more than insubstantial".

I think when the site started it was just lists of domains that had not been renewed. Maybe that was ok. Afterall a list of 40,000 domain names is < 1% of Nominet's 5m names.

But as you've added things like who got what, days, dates, etc, maybe that becomes "more than insubstantial".

I'm surprised that Nominet haven't been able to give you a bit more clarity on it Andrew - or maybe they have but you can't say.

Stinks.

:( Was just going to use deleting.co.uk as well then realized it is closed, going to have to get used to the fact now.

So what will i have to do to find deleting names, go through some deleting list, or join the DAC?

The petition wouldn't only be because of deleting. I think there are numerous reasons for it. Vote of no confidence!

Damned shame.
This was an excellent service which helped lots of people like myself to obtain domain names which i would not have known were "dropping".
It levelled the playing field and i suspect that is why it has been given orders to close down.
If you are going to look at the legal aspects, which i think would be very expensive especially as nominet have a lot of money in the bank and are a "non profit" organisation, perhaps it would be worthwhile looking at the freedom of information act
Good luck :)

"PAB member breaches Nominet contract"

Sounds like someone wants you out, or has it in for you - a jealous domainer?

makes you wonder what revenue nominet will actualy loose by shutting down that site

andrew could probably guestimate it from how many registrations were made
from his site, but i'd guess most people are like me and used it to locate dropping domains and reg straight from the automation or using their usual registrar.

1000 uniques a day
So if say each person only registered one a week ......

Oh well, that's my whole .uk drop catching operation fucked – thanks Nominet.

They'll be losing me as a member unless a comparable service is started or deleting gets a reprieve.

Anyone help me out getting hold of drop lists for .uk, even if it's a paid service?

- Rob

P.S - Thanks Andrew for starting/maintaining deleting.co.uk over the past years – much appreciated.

It's easy to be cynical about this, but it does make you wonder about Nominet's objectives.

Personally, i imagine they would like to remove any 3rd party function which provides an equal or better service than theirs.

It was afterall 'public' data, but mearly presented in a way which the domaining sector (and by that i mean only the domaining sector) found of use!
