Deleting.co.uk RIP

Lee, while your intent may be good, your email to The Register liberally mixes a few facts with a lot of unfounded speculation. There's literally no way you can quantify the monetary loss to Nominet nor the knock-on effects on Google et al. It really removes a good deal of credibility from what you're trying to do.

Best to stick to the facts, and exclusively to the facts. The press will dig deeper, speculate etc. That's what they're best at!

Edwin, keep on. I know what side of the fence you're on. I hope others read your comments and realise as well. You're happy with everything at the moment, fair enough, go and hassle someone else and try and put them down.

60 domains x £6 x 365 = £131,400 + 5 x 10 x 365 = £18,250 about £150,000 not far out. Then there's DRS on top. And it's a no brainer, less domains caught, means Sedo, Namedrive and therefore Google are affected, on top of the developers and others as mentioned previously are affected also, then within weeks, the affiliate market and other industries.

Edwin, I realise what you're doing, you're happy so stay out of it instead of trying to knock the return of deleting, you have your interets, I have mine, we all do.

Agreed with Edwin.

In addition, it's probably your own fault anyway basing your business on a free online service that could be closed down at any time anyway.

Thats a bit strong isnt it? I would say that most of the posters on this board relied on deleting, myself included.

See, so you have your own interests. Some of you people are unbelievable. Disgusting behaviour, in fact some of you clearly digust me right now, kicking when people are down hoping deleting stays down. Here we go.

There's literally no way you can quantify the monetary loss to Nominet nor the knock-on effects on Google et al, nor what most domainers are doing or plan to do. It really removes a good deal of credibility from what you're trying to say.

The facts in this case:-

- Deleting.co.uk was used by about 1,000 people a day, many of whom are in the domain drop-catching industry.
- There is currently no similar public-facing drop list service provider for the .co.uk market
- Domainers will have to make private lists, or find other arrangements, to derive the lists of domains that are dropping every day (doesn't mean they're "shut down" themselves - I'm sure many of the folks on here have their own private word lists too)
- (perhaps) The service was shut down with little or no advance warning, under pressure from Nominet

Beyond that, everything else is purest speculation.

That's it, edit your post, you plum, I'll come back to you.

For those knocking, people are watching and making their own minds up about you, so keep on. I know I'm in the right.

My activities may or may not rely on it, if I have to change and adapt I will, meanwhile I'll fight for something that you're not interested in seeing coming back. So run along son and let us fight whilst you knock the fighters because that's in your best interests to do so.

sorry? as per my previous posts in the topic i'm as cheesed off as you about deleting.co.uk closing down. i've just never relied on unnofficial external sources such as deleting.co.uk for my business to operate. eggs and baskets come to mind.

I have no idea what your "conspiracy theory" about my so-called "interests" are - nothing sinister, I assure you...

I was disappointed to see deleting.co.uk close, as I already posted earlier in this thread, as I used it several times a month to pre-search through long lists of names that were due to drop in the next few weeks. As such, it's a pain that it's gone.

Of course, I have my own private lists too (don't we all?), but they'll miss TONS of stuff that wasn't on the "master list". So if the service gets resurrected or a similar one gets launched in future, you bet I'll use it again.

My suggestions about how to approach the media were based on my own attempts at drumming up PR over the last decade or so - from trial and error, I've found that facts are worth about 100x the weight of speculation.

Look, I'm fighting for something so you derive what you will from what I'm doing, at least the message you're getting and feeding back on is the one I wish to portray so I'll leave it at that.

Just realise sometimes that other ways work also, you may well base around 'fact' but a lot of what is internet news these days is found wanting because it lacks personal opinion. My personal opinion based on possible figures are that Nominet's decision cost them £200k in lose revenues.

For the last decade I've worked in the personal opinion sector, if you wish to do a better personal release of information to get the word out about deleting and the terrible judgement by Nominet then feel free to do so, the more the better, so release yours as well please, maybe we'll get somewhere together.

Please send it to theregister, bbc, sky, and post on domainstate, namepros, a4u and get the word out, I look forward to seeing it so we can fight this decision en masse.

Owners of prize domains, i.e. really premium ones, that have failed to renew will lose out.

With deleting, when they were listed publically as about to drop they got dozens of calls asking to buy it off them and they subsequently usually renewed.

That benefit has been lost. These domains will just go to one of about 4 people.

By Deleting going it has stopped a lot of people from persuing domain names.

We're not all blessed with our own servers, nominet memberships, dac access, coding skills etc... Many of us relied on deleting to pick up domains or those that drop catch relied on deletings list of what was dropping tomorrow in order to know what to try and catch.
It was bad enough Nominet not listening to the masses stating that their system was flawed hence why one person caught everything worth catching, without now shafting everyone else to pick up the leftovers.

If someone would be so kind to tell me how I now get a list of domains that are on 98 days I would be most appreciative.

As I am also sure if someone would explain how we see what has become available today that would also help a lot of people.

You'll probably have to do what most domainers did/still do and create your own master list. Unfortunately Nominet pretty much stopped non members doing this when they created the 1000 lookup limit on the whois, so membership/DAC is the only real way to build the list, unless youve got a few years spare!

I guess it won't be long before someone caves in and sets up a paid service using their master list.

Is it better to make a formal complaint through some channel rather than just a letter? What's their guideline time for a response? and is there any articles on this announcement yet? theregister? anything? hopeless aint they.

Some useful info for everyone (I hope)...

Thanks sneezy, I sent them an email asking what their response time might be to my previous email, if I don't hear back within a reasonable time frame I'll make a formal complaint.

Cheers

Grant, How do you create the list with membership/dac? would it not eat in to your dropcatching allowance?

The easist, most comprehensive and most lengthy option is to get the .com zone file, replace the .com with .co.uk and scan the list to extract all the domains that are already registered along with the relevant dates.

As for the DAC allowance, I personally have to take over a week off dropcatching every three months to scan my lists, not sure how others do it. You could probably do it with the normal whois using proxy servers etc. but you would be running a big risk as Nom would see that as breaking the rules.

So perhaps everyone should create their lists on the same day at the same time and if in doing so nominets servers crash we can all say " well I used to use deleting but can't anymore!"
