Interesting thread, I also made the mistake of regging a tm domain when I first started out- have read lots of horror stories and deleted them quick!
On the theory of relativity one, it always helps to have a general interest in the domain in question, educational sources can actually be quite a little goldmine (read up on the nineplanets_org site at self made minds) some unique content on a simple html site gets attention from browsing students who don't tend to have adword blindness Try getting some .ac backlinks as well. All the best!

domainmonster are good, 123reg are ok, a lot of people recommend daily.co.uk

Avoid 1&1 and American registrars and you should be fine.

I use heartinternet for all my uk domains except the ones domainmonster have caught.

No probs. I use UK-Cheapest, they've always been reliable and it's great to get instant support, a bit slow at times when doing advanced changes though but a great budget registrar all the same...
