.wales / .cymru

Well just finished the 1 hour webinar with Nominet on .wales.

I'm not sure I'm any the wiser but I thought I would share some snippets.

It started with 20 guests and build upto 39.

They would not answer the fundamental questions of what is the expected volume and what is the expected price range for the new domains.

I asked the questions many times but they were just brushed over.

They had one issue when somebody asked a question in welsh and they didn't have anybody that spoke welsh to translate the question.

They appear to have some full time staff on the payroll on .wales now by the way they gave there titles at introductions.

They are prepared to run at a loss as .wales/.cymru is a good thing to do!

Stephen - did they actually say they were prepared to run it at a loss as it is a good thing to do? Are you able to keep any record of this as evidence of what was said?

Can't believe that there wasn't a welsh speaker there after all their promises to make this a fully bilingual domain.

Sorry I wrote it in a hurry, they didnt state lossing money was a good thing and they stated they had a robust plan and was sure it was going to succeed.

But when pushed lots of time on the issue, what would happen if they lost money, they brushed it aside and stated they would continue as .cymru and .wales was worthwhile regardless.

On welsh speaking I also asked the question "was it true Nominet used google translate on their documents" they said yes it was done at the beginning and was a mistake by their sub contractor and now they get everything professionally translated.

You could only see the questions you were asking not everybody elses questions.

It stated it was being recorded and I would imagine nominet will put a link on the site shortly.

If anybody else was there could they post an account please.

No Report

Several days ago I thought I would produce a document "Should Nominet proceed with .Wales?" now I do not feel that I will produce such a report.

The feedback I've gotten from domainers is, we are to tied up fighting .uk and getting ready for the next round, to spend anytime on .wales/.cymru.

I have found apathy and a lack of commitment from those that I would have expected to get more involved in .wales.

As Nominet have already spend the vast bulk of the upfront costs getting ready for .wales and a lot of effort, it would be counter-productive to get them to stop now.

I have made my feeling know to Nominet about .wales and I would still urge you to do the same.

The excercise to me as been helpful as it shows how little effort, thought and resources Nominet put into .uk compared to .wales/.cymru.

I for my part will continue to press Nominet to be more transparent and look to change the authorization process when they launch projects such as .wales which cost so much in resources and can radically change the UK namespace.

I'm sorry I have not been able to supply any passioned support, but it is because of the reasons you outline above. Whether or not that is a strategic success by Nominet I don't know but so be it.

Stephen, unlike .uk a complete halt to .wales has never been on the cards anyway (hence no question anywhere in the consultation about proceeding/not proceeding). They'll have spent US$370,000 on non-refundable application fees by this stage (plus additional costs) so all they're looking for is guidance on how to refine the policies attached to registrations under .wales/.cymru, and also for an indication of whether the 2 extensions should be tied at the hip or marketed separately.

Make no mistake about it, there is a 100% chance of .wales/.cymru happening. They already have their prioritisation numbers from the ICANN new GTLD draw that was held a couple of months ago (807 for .wales, 244 for .cymru) which means they will be launched in the first batch of 1,000 new GTLD later this year.

Thanks for that. I must admit I've not really put this on the radar, or even in the same ballpark as .uk. To me it's part of the strategic expansion of the gTLD - which for good or ill is the direction the global internet is moving in - towards a future greater set of country/city/brand tlds.

Nominet have invested in this, which probably no-one else would have or will do in the future. I'm broadly supportive of Nominet running .wales/cymru as well as other gTLD's so long as it's done professionally.

I'll be making my thoughts known to the consultation before the 28th.

subsidized ?

Hope you will consider adding comments on transparency and correct cross-accounting so .wales/.cymru not invisibly subsidized by UK domain revenue.

I second this - I don't think the true costs will ever be charged out to .wales. At the moment they're not releasing any details of the start up costs - and have proceeded with this massive project without any debate, or costs given to members. They act like a private members club - but they're not. They're using existing registrants money to set up and run .wales. For example - There were five nominet officials at that webinar - its clear that each of them is spending much time on .wales. The webinar itself was an hour - will they be costing out all the hours they are spending on .wales? Have you also noticed how Nominet are using the reason 'commercially sensitive information' every time they want to hide something.
