According to the article the purchase was due to the aquisition of the parent company eConversions.

From memory they run other websites and also boast a decent domain portfolio

I think people often read or interpret what they want in these type of sales, Its nice to see someones hard work pay off for them… Undoubtedly though there will be a plethora of idiotic speculative domains and valuation’s of sites at xxx millions... Just because you make orange juice don’t mean “the man from Delmont he say yes” though...?

morning all

Suppose I have to add my pennies worth:) Especially as we have the largest email db at 5.2 million now:):)

My congrats to Dunc as he is genuinely a nice guy, bright and astute. I am very pleased for him and was delighted to call him yesterday and wish him all the best. I am sure me and him will be having lunch soon:)

Ok my synopsis:

Whales model is simple:

They have raised $110 million over the past 9 months
They pay a % in cash for the deal and a % in shares of the holding company, hence they leverage the deal
They keep the core staff locked in
They grow by acquisition
With about $200 million they will acquire about $1 billion's worth of companies, whilst keeping the brains and the revenue.
They will consolidate deals, tech etc etc so massive reduction in costs
If I was Whale I would then appoint Dunc as European CEO and have him run the European strategy.

In 12 months they will have the market reach of Groupon and have spent $200 million.

Note Google are an investor in Whale, so Google could do a buy out for $3 billion and everyone comes away very happy.

Note the board of Whale have done this before with HomeAway and 17 other brands in the same sector.

As for MVC well Mark is Mark and I can't see him personally being part of an amalgamated company working for Dunc.

Doug

Congratulated Duncan last night over some beers. He seemed pretty pleased as far as I could tell lol. Virtually everyone in the place was queuing up to say well done...

5.2 million...that's nearly a 10th of the UK population. Crazy :)

Double opted-in email addresses of this nature command a one-off rental of around £300 per thousand. Do that a few times a month and you can see the value, and as ancillary to the core business. If the guys are doing it right (I've not checked their model - MVC/VC) then their list is worth a fortune alone.

I presume you're talking about spambots. Anyone know of a good way to stop them getting through on an email capture?
There's no way that a spam campaign will work these days.

Nah, he's talking about the people who just want to see the deals and not give their emails so they put in a fake on (those keys are one of the most common keyboard mashes)

Yeah, but they will be discarded in the opt-in process.

Thats making the big assumption that the site has an opt in process...
Yes. It is a big assumption Frog. I see you hopping around around the forum just now courting controversy.
