If you get voted in, any chance you could find out who Nominet held talks with, registrars that is re the £1 promotion.

I take it that its £1 plus vat, yet all the co branded material says £1, so any non vat companies will lose out selling at that price.

They say they hope people choose to pass this saving on, but looking at the co branded material it looks like they have agreement already, which to me isn't fair.

I'm not saying they have spoke to all the big registrars, just seems a bit odd?

Ps

Just to add in case anyone has any answers to my post.

How can nominet say they hope people will pass this on and sent so many adverts with the prize draw and uk registrations on, surely you cant have people paying different prices for entry?

I've just been asked to make a couple of ads but I can't as it doesn't add up.

Are the £1 registrations available for people holding personal TAGs? I haven't really read through any of the details.

Thanks
Stephen.

Yes didnt you get the email ?

Thanks - working in full time employment again so didn't get a chance to read the details yet. Do you need to sign up or anything, or are the discounts automatically applied when you are billed?

Stephen.

They are automatic, you only have to sign up I think if you want your customers to enter the competition.

Such a shame that running a highly automated, well understood business with a ready revenue stream in excess of £30,000,000 (10,500,000 registrations, remember) isn't seen as exciting enough for Nominet...

FYI if the £1 competition is anything like previous contests then self managed tag holders are disqualified from winning because they are registrars AND customers. Only independent customers that aren't registrars qualify.

(I know because I "won" an ipad a year or so back, only to have the prize offer rescinded within hours on just such a technicality)

+1

I think it is wrong that this revenue stream is being used to finance "exciting" pet projects that may turn out to be little more than grand follies anyway.

Agree 100%, how can that not float their boat, it is beyond me! An element of my business is semi-automated earning a reasonable and stable amount per year and there is nothing better; simplicity yielding great returns with very little overheads!

Echo that, and Edwin's thoughts too.

Annual Report available at http://www.nominet.org.uk/who-we-are/annual-reports in PDF along with those from previous years.

From that report, p. 9: " Like any good business, we want to pursue diversification opportunities to offset dependence on a solo income stream."

They make it sound as if they have a single large client. They don't. They have 10,500,000 domain registrants. Unless they believe the domain system itself is going to become obsolete - which would negate the whole need for Nominet in the first place - that revenue stream isn't going anywhere.

More generally, it's amazing how much they talk about domain names on p.6-p.9, and how little they do on the most current iteration of the About Us section of the Nominet website. It's almost as if one document had been written for one audience, and the other... Hmmm.

Yes I think this is the main problem that exuded itself at the AGM. I think Nominet are flapping (under a clueless CEO).

With release of ngtlds, .UK flop, some decline registrations and users being more interested in platforms has got them a bit worried. It was touched upon at AGM that big players are waiting to see how things flesh out before making big decisions on what domain to use. Quicker the better a few of these tinpot new gtlds start to fold and the rest follow like dominoes the better..probably going to happen in the next 12 months a few should start to wobble.

Your always going to need to map something human readable in the real world to something in the virtual world - didn't anyone tell them that

I am a little more cynical than that.

I believe that Nominet have been consciously overplaying the "threat" of new GTLD and similar factors in order to "justify" their breakneck drive to diversify away from domains and into all sorts of "high risk" (what they call "high growth") new markets.

For example from p.29 of their 2014 Annual Report http://www.nominet.org.uk/sites/default/files/nominet_report_and_accounts_2014.pdf

"Our commitment to offsetting market
conditions includes further plans to become
a more diversified business, and a renewed
focus on building on our existing expertise
and knowledge base. Accordingly, we
will continue to explore market-driven
opportunities, including expanding our
offer within the DNS space, and seeking
further opportunities to commercialise our
data visualisation software.

We will also pursue high-growth
opportunities. The coming year will see
Nominet build and expand on the early
work and investment in R&D, including
more work to explore relevant opportunities
for us and our partners connected to
an evolving internet, for example, the
emerging internet of things infrastructure,
TV Whitespace and building on exploratory
work with Smart Cities."

(sorry about the formatting, I was grabbing the text directly out of a PDF with narrow columns)

Wow, insightful, decoded to mean "we don't have a clue where we are taking the business, but hopefully fancy words will avoid too many questions"

another thing.. .wales should never have happened, practically a ngtld launch in the back yard, its diluting the very thing Nominet should be trying to maintain is the number one extension for people in the UK .UK

Can you believe how long that ridiculously amateur welsh graphic has now been on the home page of the UK domain registry - what message does that say?

I bet .de don't have these problems :)

Is .wales really much of a dilution? :)

Maybe not, but a wasted extension that's for sure. Nominet clearly fear these extensions over promoting .uk which lets face it, they've made a right mess of.

Congratulations! You did get my vote but looking at the results you didn't need it, well done indeed.
