.UK Consultation meeting

However, whatever the outcome of these discussions, there will be further work required to think though next steps

That to me, says it's still on the table. No work required if they were just going to announce "No"

.

For the rest... who really cares?

That's a ridiculous comment.
YOU might not care but Grant Unwin might, Paul McDonagh might, Sharad Madan might. Yes, some of those examples are poor but there are a number of good examples listed where directors haven't gone after the .org.uk equivalent because they're trading commecial enitities that bought into the 'primary namespace (business extension)' that Nominet started off this whole direct.uk programme with.

As far as the general public goes... its a non event. If Grant Unwin cares that much he can almost certainly buy the domain. Yes it sucks for him... but in the bigger picture its a non issue. Its inevitable a small number of people are going to need to lose out personally, for .uk to go ahead.

Not sure your absolutely right because, if it was a NO it would require some thought as to how to restore confidence in the current name space, and how to justify past events.

I wonder if Nom can go ahead with saying there will be a new .UK, but delay revealing the mechanism of allocation. This would have obvious benefits to them.. :|

They might, but whenever it ultimately gets announced there is going to have to be an "advance period" - they're not going to be able to spring it on people full-formed as in "from today, you can register domains under .uk following such and such criteria". So regardless of when the announcement comes down, there will be a gap between detail and live implementation.

Anyone got any nominet feedback ?

Could it be a bonfire night special.

Nothing on the Nominet forum, on the Twitter accounts of any of the directors at the Board meeting, or indexed by Google on the subject in the last week. No third party tweets referencing "Nominet" with any further information, either.

It seems to be tighter than the bank of England meetings

Does greywing have anything, he hasn't posted lately, to my knowledge.

Not really surprising. If you think how many Board members will have excused themselves due to conflicts of interest, you're talking about a minute group of people actually involved in the final decision. Consequently any leak would be super-easy to pin on the guilty party.

I wonder how many of them have kids and grannies who are now purchasing domains, already knowing they are .uk qualifying.

If that was the case you would have expected more movement in the secondary market and that doesn't seem to be the case, suggests to me a NO or Further Consultation.

Its not going to be noticeable if deals are being done by contacting end users. Plus they couldn't buy dozens or hundreds of them... they could pick up 1-2 here and there relatively unnoticed though.

I know theirs some miss trust of Nominet not sure they would go down this route. My guess is the qualifying quality .org.uk/me.uk holders are well aware off the potential value by now and are waiting to see what happens
I know the few I've contacted have had plenty of offers already

Sure, I've had some offers myself on domains I've owned a long time. And I've speculatively bought some domains on the hope they get .uk. And I've refused to buy other domains (or offered less for them) because they don't qualify for .uk, etc.

If you knew 100% what was going on while everyone else was guessing, you could make a hell of a lot of money.

no changes would take place prior to 2014

From the end of the .uk consultation document;

What will happen at the end of this consultation?
The feedback we receive will inform our decision making on the way forward. We will publish all formal stakeholder responses (subject to their consent) once this decision has been made along with a summary. You can choose whether you would like us to publish your response or not. If we move ahead, any changes to our policy would be notified to our stakeholders with at least 30 days notice prior to implementation. In any event, no changes would take place prior to 2014.

Spoke briefly to Nominet staff at PICTFOR meeting today.

They would not be drawn on .uk outcome or provide a date for release of .uk decision but confirmed they are trying to arrange for a Nominet registrar meeting in the new year, but nothing firmer than that.

It depends on the definition of early November, but would have to be before the 15th or it would fall into middle of November.
My understanding of early November would be the first few days even if the update is not definitive.

"The feedback will be reviewed by our Board at their next meeting on 29th October. Once a decision has been reached on the way forward, we will publish submissions, where permission has been given to do so, and an assessment of the impact of the current proposal. We expect to publish our update in early November."

Maybe a lottery mechanism then? Buyers got in to deep with those short domains, end users are just not interested in them (that's my experience with my small holding).
