The new Real Time DAC

Status
Not open for further replies.
Following feedback from our registrars and the PAB we have reviewed the
proposed changes to the domain availability checker. Based on this
feedback we are going to make a number of changes to the DAC to ensure
that we continue to provide a robust service for checking the availability
of domain names for the purpose of making new registrations.

We will be asking the PAB to add the policy regarding the re-registration
of cancelled domain names to its work programme, which could result in
further changes to the DAC services in the future.

The changes to the DAC are being made because a number of registrars were
experiencing problems with the existing DAC limits.

The time delay DAC is being introduced to provide registrars additional
query volumes based on the number of queries required to service a large
number of customers where timeliness of the response is not a major issue
- see Introduction

The real time DAC provides instant responses about domain name
availability. We are removing the suspended and registration status fields
from the real time DAC in order to enhance performance, reduce database
load and improve the robustness of the service - see
Introduction

We previously published a number of changes to the DAC terms and
conditions. Following concerns expressed by members and users of the
service, we have made a number of changes to the terms of use. The terms
and conditions for using the DAC are important to allow us to effectively
take measures to protect the register database.

Details about the key changes to the new terms and conditions are now
available: Latest News

We will be implementing the changes to the DAC in 60 days on Tuesday 30
June at 12:00 (midday).

Interesting:

Time Delay DAC:
Daily access limit EQUALS 5 x number of domain names on tag
PLUS 200 x your highest monthly new registration figure
from the past 12 months

Real time DAC.
The maximum query rate is 1,000 queries per rolling 60 seconds recalculated every 5 seconds and a maximum of 432,000 per rolling 24 hours, recalculated every five minutes.

Will allow larger TAGs to hold current drop lists and stand more chance of grabbing them on the drop.

Surely this only affects list building since after 100ms valuable drops are well gone.

The newly added clause says you cannot retain any DAC data for more than 7 days unless they are domains on your TAG so in theory noone will be able to build/maintain droplists.

Make two changes to fix the issues then add a brand new clause that puts everything back to where it was. Big thumbs up to Nominet!

Does that only apply to DAC accessed data rather than Whois accessed?

Got onto the subject of dropcatching and was asked what my feeling would be about Nominet producing droplists, interesting .

Could be the thinking?

It would be the best solution I'm sure. I can understand them wanting something in there so they can take action against people storing and using data in a dodgy way but at the moment it's at the expense of us lot.

The changes and added clause suggest that whoever is writing the terms doesn't really understand!?!

It specifically says the DAC:

5.3.7. retain (in any format) any information obtained from the DAC for a period of more than 7 days unless such information relates solely to domain names for which you are the registrant and/or registrar.

That was really my observation to Nominet. I supported their lockdown on whois/registrant data, but they really needed to differentiate between condensed dac data - which holds NO registrant info and WHOIS data which DOES.

Still looks like it was written by a lawyer and not anyone with any technical knowledge.

But, at least the're going to listen to the PAB between now and then. And there may be more info on Nominet droplists by the go live date

S

Yep agreed, at least the will seems to be there but as Grant says the indepth knowledge on these things may not be. Hopefully the PAB will put it right on that side in time.

ok ive been away for a while, whats the situation with the dac, is it still going ahead on 30th june and are list making banned after this date?

It's time for a definitive statement policy from Nominet, plus some mention of how they are about to police sites like aboutus.org and domaintools.com; plus a plethora of other data-retaining sites. A board of directors who insist on making this a grey area; with ludicrous dissemination/retention policies are, in my mind a laughing stock.

can a pab member please direct us to where the definate rules are etc and date this is going ahead as too me it is still up in arms and needs full documenting and clarifying.

Im sure the pab members know these details ?

Paul, the joke is that there aren't any.

i can see that as nominets site just links you to page after page back and forth. And come on lets be honest isnt the PAB supposed to keep us upto date on these things? or am i wrong.

The May PAB meeting minutes aren't on the site yet. Not sure if Rob knows what date they'll be made available.
