Perfect working dream?

I agree about not wanting to be in an expat nightmare
a few here and there would be tolerable

one thing I found weird about Greek property prices was they didn't seem to be dropping
I mean in spain and france and many other (I think more desirable places) they have been dropping like crazy, especially spain

but Greek property seems wildy overpriced, last time I looked
at the top end
my other criticism of greek property is it's not varied
like in France and England in particular we have so many amazing old varied beautiful properties

spain and greece are very samey
I think rare to find something really beautiful
needs to be a converted mill or something old
just imo

Has the Euro had much of an affect on tourist prices? i.e. has beer/meals gone up, down, the same?

Yes I think its pricey compared to what it used to be, even the last time you were here. Its still not too bad, but its not too long ago it was 1 Euro for a bottle of beer, now a 500ml bottl of Mythos is between 2.50 and 4 Euros depending where you go.

However rent, electric, water are half the price of the UK. Overall it costs me about half as much to live here I'd say.

yeah, I have loved my holidays in Greece
and really like the people and LOVE the food and weather and everything
BUT is bloody expensive and they do themselves a disservice due to this as there are so many other options
so much bad publicity for past few years you would think bargain prices would attract millions but they keep prices so high
It's kept me away and actually when I think of friends and family
all love Greece but none have gone in years
spain, balearics, canaries seems to be the hot choice for all of them

Well thats interesting, because there has never been a better time to buy a property here (at least if you are going to live here or use it yourself). Basically there are two rates - the prices they sell houses to British tourists at, and the real prices.

The big thing right now is the auctions. Two months ago a chap I know here got a 4 bedroom villa which was previously valued at 280,000 Euros for 118,000 Euros. You have to have the money to buy though, and pay within one week.

I have used my entire life savings on medical bills for my daughter, but if I still had money now I could literally make a fortune. One of my Greek friends here owns a construction company, there are many houses, apartment buildings and even small hotels that are almost finished ready to be snapped up.

Here is a link to the biggest estate agent on Rhodes, but beware, these are full belt tourist prices, not what I regard as "real" prices. Hope you like his website by the way! ;)

Thanks for that, I'll take a peak!

No problem Brewsters! Let me know if you need someone to acquire property for you, I charge a very reasonable 40% commission! ;)

Just to give you an idea, I have attached a picture of my house below. I just rent it, the rent is 400E per month (about £350). Its 3 double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large open plan kitchen / living room and quite a bit of space outside. The official value now is 180,000 Euros, which is 40,000 less than last year, but he told me he'd sell it to me for 120,000 Euros. Not too bad, I wish I had money!

I moved from UK to Cyprus 5 years ago (with a wife and 2 young kids)

Im in a Village just outside Limassol (see pic)

Its a very English speaking island, so there is no language barrier, and with the military bases and the ex-pat communities it does make you feel safer.

I survive on very little money - but i learnt a long time ago, the more you have, the more you need..
income comes from domains and i also clean a few pools for beer money

So their are a few of you out there that are kind of living the perfect living dream (compared to UK)

I'm aiming to spread my sources of incoming to get away more to start with always good to know people with apartments around the world to rent cheaply from.

Watch this space! :D

Loving this thread always dreamed of living abroad some were warm.
Went to kos last year beautiful place great people.
Some of the bars in town were a bit pricey 3 - 4 euros for a beer if you look around though could pick up a local brew for 2 euros in the day

If you are not resident in the UK for tax purposes and your business has NO UK trade eg offices, active company, bank accounts, agencies etc then you can run your business free from any form of UK taxes.

You cannot trade in the UK and escape taxes legally.

The very important difference to note is the difference between "uk trade" and "trading with the UK"

If you are set up correctly having taken the appropriate advice theres nothing to stop you not paying UK taxes although you need to ensure you dont control or run any of the offshore businesses activities when you are in the UK. Ever. Meetings with clients are okay but board meetings, or signing paperwork, or meeting with other directors should be done abroad, ideally in the tax jurisdiction your offshore company is located.

However you have the old chestnut of can you afford to live in/do you want to live in a tax haven or simply trade 1 pain in the ass tax system for another

For around 2 years I was completely internet based and zero face-to-face meetings. Lucky enough to take an extended trip and was amazing. Photo below is of Colombia, went with the misses to south america for 3 months, weeks at the beach. As a bonus sold a domain/site whilst there which paid for the trip - good times.

Now back to a mixture of client work & Aff, enjoy the stability & enjoy the face to face contact - which I did miss.

And here's me planning on moving to Hamburg in February for 6 months, it will be cold over there maybe even snow, the top temperature is only 22c at any point all year.

It is a really big city and got a good mixture old architecture/history and a fantastic nightlife.

So to sum it up I will be living in somewhere which is mostly cold and in an 8 bed dorm with strangers.

About as exotic as it gets for me :p

I moved to Malta years ago. If you are web-based and earning a living no need to be stuck in UK. Offshore accounts can be used for tax purposes with tax only being paid at source or on money actually transferred to your resident country. No need to be illegal or 'tax-dodge' just get good legal advice.

Do you mean 5htp? Tried that!! When the sun shines, I am so much happier! Crazy but true...

It's quite fascinating how many on here are expats! Personally I love Cyprus. Tempted to look at investing in a property over there!

£360 a month! I spend more than that on diesel and I work from home.

My marriage is coming to an end so part of me is thinking go abroad, but I can't stand the thought of being away from my kids, so I know I won't do it, but the idea of it is nice.

Well I always think of the fact that I can get to Gatwick in about 3 and a half hours, its not too bad really.

I am same as you Brewsters
b ut i have been weighing up in mind for years/decades

I have always done right thing (or so I thought) and stayed but talking to my eldest she would love nothing more than me living abroad and having multiple holidays for weeks at a time throughout year

also they would learn languages abroad
uk system if worst in world for learning languages

but it'sd the guilt, need to be here for them every day especially in teen years but I know better life in many other countries
It gives them options when older too rather than feeling they HAVE to stay
I am too long in tooth to think grass is greener on all counts but by same token
I know how this country operates and although there are some wonderful people here we really suck here in uk and frankly deserve a lot of whats coming
ie. shit hitting fan

I want the simple, good life. you have to be rich to have it ironically in uk
not the case in many other countries

also if you just move to say cornwall, it is unaffordable and owuld take longer to get to say york than if you were flying from spain lol
