You get dongles with accept external aerials as well, they usually just plug in like on a router. I use one while travelling via train or car to hold a signal.
I think my dongle is a 180 huewe or however is spelled, I paid about £25 on ebay for an antenna kit. The Antenna base unit is like a lil black thing shark fin thing that looks like its been knocked off the top of a BMW. I got a 3-4 meter cable, a half meter short cable, a lil clip that goes onto corner of laptop screen. Its supposed to deliver 20db of boost, but I don't know about that.
Performance wise, on the 3 dongle I get about 100%-150% increase, so 1 bar will go to flickering between 2-3, and on the o2 one, I get about 200%, give or take.
