Nominet announces programme for evolving the .uk domain name space

If you can afford to give £60K away, I don't see why you should being balking at such a sum, at least negotiate.

There isn't anything to negotiate over though - I don't want the domain. I'm just curious as to how it ended up at a valuation like that.

I think realistically, a .org.uk can't ever be a brand (outside of charities). And if the phrase itself has no commercial intent, its useless as an seo play. So I was just wondering if the high 4 figure valuation was set purely on the the fact there is a bigger site on the .co.uk.

If Monkey.org.uk was listed on domain lore for $500, would it get any bids, assuming I didn't bid? I don't think it would.

No your wrong i just used sedo's suggested price :p

Lol, I didn't realise the owner was on here. I'm not going to buy it either way but just curious here... would it be a fair assumption that your $8000 valuation of a non commercial .org.uk was purely arrived at because the .co.uk has a reasonably big site on it?

.co.uk should get .uk full stop. Nothing else is ethical.

I so hope Graeme gets voted in.

With the whole direct.uk issue floating over the forthcoming elections, it'll be interesting to hear the views of all the candidates on some of the specific issues raised in the consultation and I'm sure that many will use this to decide where to place their vote.

Yes. Then we will witness the large Registrars vote getting their favoured candidate elected. They will be salivating at the prospect of .uk coming to fruition.

Wow, I'm gobsmacked that you spent 6 figures on a .org.uk just to have an exact match domain. You should have bought monkey.co.uk at the outset and spent the money on building that brand, it's infinitely better than carinsurance.org.uk.

Easy to say with hindsight. Bear in mind when I bought the domain, the exact match update hadn't taken place, and Google hadn't started actively chasing down link buyers to whack. So we got hurt on two fronts there.

As for .org.uk, would it be unreasonable to say that a monkey rescue charity would find a use for monkey.org.uk and that it would be a perfect fit

Sure, that was my only thought of a viable use for this domain. But given it would be a charity... would they not be better off buying monkeyrescue.org.uk for a fiver then using the other $7900 to actually rescue some monkeys? I think you would really struggle to get a charity to pay that kind of asking price.

I know it doesn't look that way but I'm not having a go at you, you've done well out of your decisions, certainly better than I have but domains and their value is a complex subject and personally I would say that monkey.org.uk fits the extension equally, arguably better than carinsurance.org.uk

No worries at all, I don't agree with what you're saying but I'd rather you said it. I'm not going to take any offence at anyone disagreeing with me :)

For me, I think you are going horribly wrong by comparing a potential charity sale to a potential commercial sale that would make 6 figures a month on page 1.

At the right (low) price, I think Monkey.org.uk is a brilliant domain for a charity. I don't think a small charity could justify the price currently being asked. And any charity looking for a domain would be small - its extremely unlikely a big charity is going to rebrand onto a totally new domain.

CarInsurance is a massive commercial phrase. I clearly landed on the wrong side of the coin flip this time, but I would absolutely take the gamble again. I think its important to be able to differentiate between making the wrong choice in the first place, and ending up with the wrong result. Sorta like hitting on 12 when playing Blackjack and being dealt a King... you did make the right bet but you just came out on the wrong side of it on that particular occasion :p

And if you are right foz then surely we're in a position where Nominet has been 'captured' by big registrars. Is that better or worse then being 'captured' by domainers I wonder? Hmm.

I'm just curious as to how it ended up at a valuation like that.

Supply and demand, whats why.

Carinsurance.com - USA targeted business on it. Not for sale.
Carinsurance.org - USA targeted business on it. Not for sale.
Carinsurance.net - was sold for big money previously, not for sale.
Carinsurance.co.uk - Jesus, don't let me get started on this one. Lets just mark it down not for sale :D

So that left a solitary exact match domain available. I wanted an exact match domain, there was only 1 so didn't have the luxury of playing owners off of each other and seeing who folded first. I have made millions from ranking exact match domains. I figured this one was worth a six figure sum, and have the past seo rankings, figures and data to back up the investment/gamble (whatever you want to call it). Spending this money wasn't going to kill me if I lost the lot, and the upside was worth it. I still stand by that comment... it obviously didn't work out in the end but the numbers at the time did make sense. I'd do the same again right now.

So thats how I came to that valuation :)

How Nominet is set-up is wrong. The UK Registry and UK Internet Governance should be separated. Any person or entity could be a member of UKIG (£30) to shape policy (voting) but have no influence on the UK Registry operations.

Like .nz I am a member of InternetNZ but I cannot influence the operation of the NZRS (.nz Registry) with my vote.

It's a problem, as with the banks, when people are on salaries and run a cash rich business with a hold over their customers and can gamble to increase their own lot.

No identifiable benefit to the customer.

I don't think it would be unreasonable to describe the .me.uk as utterly worthless in its own right. So it will be interesting to see what it sells for, given its currently in a Sedo auction. I would assume anyone buying is doing so for the chance to get employment.uk

Employment.me.uk ?

I would suggest you need to check on:

employment.plc.uk

before you make a bid!

Ah, wasn't aware that was registered. With it being a plc (assuming bureaucracy in getting things done) and no site on their current domain, the chances are probably reasonable that they either pass on employment.uk, or didn't know about it in the first place. Adds more of a gamble into things though :)

Well if things move forward as Nominet have currently indicated (and without a 'prequalifying' ownership date)

Emails are going to be flying in abundance - I don't think I can handle even the stress of thinking about it

Haha, that's funny.

This is really a roller coaster isn't it? When news first broke about .uk the prices of .co.uk's dropped loads and people were saying that they didn't want to risk investing in any more domains. Now it looks like demand (and therefore price) will shoot up.

However, I'd still be careful if you're going to invest plenty of money in to domains because of this. Have to admit though, I'm tempted to try get my hands on a few.

Very Cruel.. but funny.

Am I missing something - this proposal is not set in stone yet?
