This is a policy issue that has been discussed and rejected by our Policy Advisory Board more than once. Whilst I can see the pros and cons to this idea, I think it is going to cease to be that much of an issue when prenoms are finished.

What about a raffle? I'm NOT joking. Buy a ticket for a particular domain...... and fingers crossed. It would mean a reduction in the concentration of domains in the ownership of a select few in the first instance.

woudn't work IMO.

1. manual labour for nominet torun the raffles
2. people would just end up buying hundreds of tickets to take advantage
3. its a stupid idea, no offence :)

Ah... but if you didn't win the domain, you might still get a nice basket of fruit as a consolation prize :p

The price of the ticket takes care of 1. 2 is human behaviour. 3...drop the image of a village fete and tombola. When I say 'raffle' I have something more technical in mind. No offence taken.

The problem with the auction/raffle idea is that instead of people moaning that they don't catch any names becuse their script isn't good enough or they don't have a script at all there will be a whole bunch of people complaining because they dont have enough money to outbid the rich people.

A straight 'raffle', buy as many tickets as you want to.

The rich people would just buy more tickets and get more domains? Many people on here have spent years working on their scripts, changing the system to favour rich lazy people who can't be arsed to put the time in doesn't sound like a very fair system to me?? ;)

So only rich people and technical wizards count? That leaves about 90% of the population out in the cold. Even if under a 'raffle' system an individual can only afford to buy one ticket that still gives them a chance. With catching they've no chance whatsoever. 'FCFS' is merely a play on words. Whatever.

What's stopping you from becoming a technical wizard?, there is nothing on earth stopping you or Tony Blair from making your/their own script, looking at the same things as everyone else does...nobody has an advantage except knowledge...which can be gained with time and effort.

I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about the 90% of the population.

And to be honest who gives a flying f*ck if you are?...I know I don't...same question really....what stops this 90% of the population going out or even staying in and learning how to code C++/PHP/BASIC for all I care and becoming one of these so call masters....I tell you what's stopping them shall I??!?!?!?....Absolutely F*CK ALL, that's what.

Point taken?!?!

Is that a Newark dialect?

Sure is, round here we speak proper england. :p ......................innit

See the point i'm trying to make though?, why should this 90% of the population be in which a chance of owning business.co.uk for example if they aren't prepared to put the effort in that so many of us have done?

Nobody has any advantage over each other, put the time and effort into it like everyone else....don't suggest raffle tickets because you can't compete. By my own admission I don't catch an awful lot but i'm not suggesting we should randomise and spread the catches between people "fairly" that's just stupid.

I wasn't quite sure. I thought there might be a bit of Mansfield mixed in there somewhere. We know which 'bit' I'm talking about. Very pithy.

Having lived in Mansfield before you could be right, i'm suprised you don't have an epigrammatic tongue yourself.

Anyway, back to the topic

Any idea when this is likely to happen, i.e. within the year?

There aren't many left, but I don't know the numbers or the dates. Certainly within the year though.

I bet we are all waiting for radio.co.uk traffic.co.uk and business.co.uk to drop ;)
