Nah it's not me really, it's the prenom button pusher at Nominet :D

He gets turned on thinking of all those catchers wasting their DAC allowance on business.co.uk

He did it again...

He'll be out of a job soon enough... the end of prenoms is in sight.

Sure it's not Jay in his holiday outfit? ;)

Here's a more serious response to some of the points made in this thread and others.

As far as we know there are no artefacts in the way that the Automaton drops domains that means someone can work out any pattern. However that does not mean that there are not any, just that we don't know about them. Sometimes people do find something that gives them an edge but they are not uncovering a 'cheat' we have built into the system, they are discovering some hidden attribute.

There is no way that we are ever going to be able to remove all such phenomena so that nobody can ever detect something new. To explain why gets a bit esoteric, but it comes down to main reasons
-- Whilst the drop pattern is random, the whole system is still built on deterministic processes and deterministic technology.
-- The harder you look and the more thought you put into it then the more you can find in any set of data that is not totally random.

An analogy here is that you will learn more about the nature of molecules with a better microscope and better computers - the molecules themselves never change.

Of course when someone does tell us about a new phenomena then we will remove it if at all possible.

So the overall point is that I think that some people still jump far too quickly to the belief in hidden links with tags rather than the more obvious explanation that someone has worked something clever out. All the big incidents that we have investigated come down to someone having the edge by doing something that nobody else has thought about or seeing something that nobody else has seen.

Personally, I am constantly amazed by the ingenuity I come across some of you displaying.

Just a thought Jay, instead of Nominet dropping domains why doesn't it hold an auction for each and every domain (like Pool.com does), surely that's a fairer way to spread the domains about plus Nominet will earn a substantial income so they can then drop the over-priced transfer fee.

that means those with deepest pockets would get the names.... :)

Incidently - http://www.nominet.org.uk/intelligence/statistics/service/ shows a spike of 10,000 registrant transfers in July 06.

The interesting bit is by doing abit of twiddling with figures I would estimate revenue from transfers being between £300-£400,000 a year which does seem to make the costs 'recovered' rather high.

Anyone got firmer stats?

Anyone got firmer stats?

If all the transfers over the last 12 months were individual transfers the revenue generated would be £1,148,640 + vat

I'm guessing that about half would be mass transfers so about £600,000 +vat

I would like to know what was responsible for the spike in transfers last month, anybody buy any big portfolios lately?

Shouldn't you! discover that hidden attribute/s before "they" have discovered it/them?

If someone is constantly beating other TAG holders do you think you should investigate and force your soul to find the hidden attribute?

I am not an IT manager but If I was I would do like that.

PS : If you again come up with an answer that some people are clever than others, then please do not bother to reply.

Rubbish.

If these people have spent hours and hours researching and perfecting their methods, then they are the ones that deserve and get the reward, not you.

Instead of posting on here like a crybaby why don't you spend the time looking into new methods and optimizing your script?

Couldn’t agree more Jonno.

If they aren’t breaking the acceptable use policy set by Nominet, then fair play to them.

How do you know that I don't? I am out of here.

The whole point is that we don't know about them. So how do we know when we've found them all? We don't even know what we are looking for. Anyway, why should we go to the obsessive lengths that some of you do? The effort would be enormous.

I bet when you finally find something that nobody else has you won't be saying that.

This is a policy issue that has been discussed and rejected by our Policy Advisory Board more than once. Whilst I can see the pros and cons to this idea, I think it is going to cease to be that much of an issue when prenoms are finished.
