Google update... going after EMD's

Going down or getting killed completely? In my case it's killed completely which I don't think is fair. Has anybody had an EMD that has gone down a few positions because of this algo change? From what I've seen it has been much worse that "going down".

Page #1 ... Drum roll please... Page #30

Has anyone noticed an upturn in traffic today?

There must be lots of sites picking up the traffic that has been lost by those affected by the recent changes...

Most likely to be google properties and big brands benefitting. Not much else left in the serps.

Stephen.

That's it im just gonna reg garbage domains now just so they aren't a end, fjtdgguf.co.uk sounds good, endless choices of what i can put on the domain

It just dawned on me.. Perhaps this is because of the new Tlds coming out. Perhaps G worried about all those new EMDs destroying SERPs!

I have a couple of sites on EMDs and the rankings haven't changed

An interesting article on Google's perception and detection of commercial keyword domains (and hyphens). All conjecture based upon a patent however.

They are actually calling EMDs spam there! Buying and using a keyword domain does not mean you're trying to trick a search engine!

Ironic that Edwin started a thread about EMDs having more oomph than hyphenated versions, since Google doesn't recognise the hyphenated domain as an EMD...

In that case it could well be that hyphenated domains now have more oomph than the non-hyphenated EMD equivalent.

Might just be my imagination, but I seem to be noticing quite a lot more hyphenated domains in the SERPs than before the update.

Yep, me too... and partial match as well.

we are only two days into the update, things often calm down again. this has been the case many times in the past.

i've lost rankings for both EMD's and a couple of non EMD sites. yet a couple of my other EMD sites are currently unchanged. that leaves me non the wiser. so im just going to make some elderberry wine today and see where my sites are tomorrow.

then get a job next week! hah!

Don't like to get involved in the speculation of individuals as seen it all too many times but this i read from Aaron Wall sums up my views well about diversifying. Diversifying doesn't mean seo is dead it is just not something to solely rely on in a business model. Really it should never have been anyway.

quote below:

"Is it time to abandon search for greener pastures?

I don't really see it that way.

As search gets more competitive we might be required to jump through more hoops or have more influence in those markets outside of search to maintain our search influence in those markets.

Building non-search distribution makes it easier to compete inside search & mitigates the potential losses if & when something funky happens in the search space. But if we forego search in a hope to mitigate risk & diversify we are foregoing one of our strongest competitive advantages."

I think the key for anyone who makes a living solely online is to have a site/sites that don't soley rely on Google. I don't mean traffic from Bing, i mean getting people returning to your site, making people want to keep using your site.

After the recent updates it's bl**dy scary to have your sole income relying on google and something that myself personally can't consider. In the last few updates I've had sites wiped out and big portions of income gone, luckily i'm young and not having to support a family or have bills that I need cash for, if I did and Google hit me i'd be devastated.

Nows probably the time to buy shares in google - imagine all of those people who will now have to turn to adwords to try and stay in business.

That's where it' heading. Googles businesses & associates in the organic search #1 page and the rest fighting for ever increasing ctr costs in the paid ads. Especially for high-contention sectors e.g. finance.

Well I've just been doing some investigating re one of my sites that's dropped, and guess what I've found.

Some cheeky fecker has scraped my entire website, turned it into an ebook, and is selling it on Lulu.com with MY FECKING NAME on the ebook.

Now that is funny. More cheek than the Serena Sisters.

If Google are already clamping down hard on EMDs now and in the future how is that going to effect people like Edwin at memorable domains who's whole sales pitch is based on EMDs and the benefit they give in search engines. Memorable have over 6,500 domains up for sale so thats a massive kick in the nuts for getting top dollar and also finding buyers willing to buy not knowing if or when the big G are going to rank a purchased EMD at all.

Edwin's sales pitch seems to be based on all the benefits of an EMD, of which search engines are only part of.

True but doesn't most of a sites traffic come from the search engines, and if your EMD has been hit with a penalty for being just an EMD, no matter what the quality of content is, its like having a fight with your arms tied behind your back...basically the advantage becomes a disadvantage as you could be hit at anytime...
