Call me thick or blind, but I want to register a reg fee domain name from within my Nominet online services, but I can't see anything where I can actually register a domain, I know such a place exists and it costs £5 + VAT to reg a name using Nominet, but where

I'm not sure if you can from online services. I think you will probably need to use epp or the automaton to register domains onto your TAG, Failing that you could register them elsewhere and do a TAG change.

I believe you have to connect to the automated service, noms don't supply a system directly.

Maybe speak to chris (AquaNuke) about DacPanel :)

I see, that's a bit silly ain't it, Nominet not having their own function to register a domain name like at any registrar like 123-reg, bloody stupid if you ask me

Another question, all of my domains are currently with 123-reg, how do I get all those under my own TAG, is it a simple case of changing the TAG in my 123-reg control panel and then they all appear in my online services under web domain manager?

Rather than just becoming a member and then paying money out left right and centre for systems that do everything for you it might be a good idea (and educational) to learn how everything works :) :

The automaton is a pretty powerful system and fairly simple to use once you've set the pgp stuff up.

Personally when I moved about 400 domains away from 123-reg I did most as an online transfer via nom to save time. (as suggested by another user)

Otherwise its change the tag 1 by 1 with their god aweful tag change process. You could try emailing them and asking them but they are pretty useless on the whole.

@ Grant, all that stuff on those links is way over my had, been reading through all that stuff a lot the last few days, makes my head want to explode.

I thought like any registrar there was going to be simple field where you type in a domain name, it checks it's available to register and then you register it, I still can't believe they don't have that basic function on Nominet.

What about renewals, say I have a domain that I need to renew, if I transfer my domains to my own TAG, will there be a simple button to click to renew any of my domains? Please don't tell me I need to become a computer scientist just to do something simple like that as well?

[edit]

@ Skinner, yeah, I just found the registrar change button so I could change the TAG on them all to mine at the same time for the sake of £11.50, but I'll only do that if I can renew my domains from online services, otherwise it's not worth the bother and I'll just renew them at 123-reg, it's just that I'd prefer 123 not to have our debit card details.

Because of that silly drop down menu, and frame like setup of 123 after each tag change you have to goto step 1 again, its a bloody joke, I did about 30 by hand and it took me forever.

As grant said the PGP seems to be the hardest bit to do, with some experienced people having issues too.

You can...

Web domain manager > list domains > click "create domain" button at top.

@ Skinner, I don't mind using the TAG change on 123-reg as I only have 68 domains on there I think, it would only take me 1/2 an hour to change the TAG on all of them.

So if I change the TAG to mine on 123, does that automatically go to my account in my Nominet online services without having to pay the £11.50 to do it at Nominet using the registrar change?

I'm not sure if you have 'refresh' your account once you change the tag so your account see's them, but it certainly avoids the £11.50 charge :)

Maybe a tag holder can tell you more, but I know its free to change the tag :)

Once you change all the tags at 123-REG, you will need to reset your password on your Nominet account to then be able to see them.

Dont ask me why they dont just appear.

If registrant details are slightly different you will end up with several accounts at Nominet ( registrant name Dave, David cannot be in same account). Once they are all at nominet try the merge accoutns facility and you will see if there are any different ones. If they are close then you can request that Nominetchange them free of charge via online message system to enable you to merge into one account which makes it easier to keep track of. Then when you regsiter new domains ensure it is added to the same account number

I found out last night that I can register domains from within my Nominet online services, which I did by going to the Web Domain Manager tab, then Domains sub tab, click Create Domain button and registered the org.uk mens mountain bikes on my TAG from there.

Still can't see how to transfer a domain that's on my TAG, though, in the normal Your Domains section you just click Registrant Transfer to transfer a domain, can't see that option anywhere in the Web Domain Manager for my TAG, any ideas?

The only option buttons there are:

Creat Domain
Modify
Renew
Delete
Release
Merge
Fork
Mark Not required

Nothing for registrant transfer.

Nominet is doing my freakin head in, it's a complete nightmare, the most annoying, convoluted and cumbersome system I have ever tried to use

I changed the TAG on 2 domains in my 123-reg account to see how the transfer to my TAg works, then did a password reset at Nominet thinking those 2 domains now changed to my TAG would now be in my web domain manager on my TAG.

But no, that would be far too simple, instead, they are in the normal part of my Nominet account under the tab, Your Domains, I merged them and they are with all my other domains, but not in the section for my TAG, also, they still have 123-REG as their TAG, not mine.

Then I received a couple of these emails in my spam folder:

The following message was sent from the Automaton:

What am I supposed to do with that? I had a read about the PGP thing on Nominet, still none the wiser, no idea how to set that up or even how it works, and it's something to do with Windows, and this is a Linux desktop so probably can't do it on here anyway, and I don't like downloading stuff on my laptop, Nominet is a right pain in the backside

Honestly bud, you maybe better paying Chris at Caught for Dac Panel until you either code your own or work it out. I intend on just paying chris for that until I code my own (I'm very lazy on my own projects :p)

I think it means your TAG is not set up to accept transfers to it. There is a setting in Nom control panel to say always accept transfers in.

The email is asking you IF you want to accept the transfer and you need a PGP signed email to reply.... Change the setting to accept and they try again atv 123-reg, possibly with a different domain in case that one is held in limbo for few days waiting for reply.

Dave

In web domain manager there is a way to accept the domain onto your tag. I did it a few days a go but have since slept so its out of my head. There was a part saying I have waiting transactions or similar.
Ill move another one and see if I can find it again.
