One reason to opt in for the url is that people can easily contact you about domains you have for sale just from the whois.....

@ Mat, I see, didn't think of that, I'll still leave it blank, though, I wouldn't sell to anyone contacting me through my site or by email anyway, I'll only sell on Acorn.

Cheers Mat, you'd think they would have a check box for the personal use option on the form, instead of assuming everyone is a businessman.

Presumably if you sell on a domain though the new owner has to agree to the Nominet T&C's so they should be presented at some point prior to completion of the transaction?

@ Monaghan, does anyone here send details of Nominets terms and conditions when they sell a domain name on Acorn? Don't they get a link to those terms when they get the Nominet domain transfer email? Or when they start the transfer procedure, there will be details there for them to accept before they finish the transfer and conclude the transaction?

You only need to worry about that if your selling domains at reg fee level where the user wont actualy see any of the nominet T&C's or forms.

Are you sure?

Why would you get a membership and tag and then only sell at rock bottom prices to resellers?

Agreed, BUT... if you want to follow the rules you should really be presenting the T&C's prior to purchase - you will have their money by the time you initiate the transfer. The likelyhood of anyone signing up here and not having a clue about Nominet is probably low but still a possibility. A link on your main web site is simple enough to do, you can't make anyone read it but you can make it available, ours is in the checkout process between selection and final purchase, my guess is nobody's ever followed it, but it is there somewhere!

@ Firestars, hopefully, any names I catch wont be at rock bottom reseller prices :)

Just realised, August 1st is on Saturday, I know Nominet don't normally work at weekends to do with routine domain stuff, but do they still deal with membership applications at weekends, or will I have to wait until Monday for them to sort my membership application after I apply for it on the 1st?

My mrs is going to the bank shortly to put some money if for me, so I'll order my TAG today and my membership on Saturday

@ Monaghan, OK, just to be on the safe side, even though Mat said differently, I'll make a quick single page up with the Nominet rules/TOS on it and direct any buyers to it, up to them if they read it.

I doubt they will be working on Saturday, the office seems to be M-F 9-5.

No harm in having a link to the T&C's from your site, it just covers your arse if you get any issue.

When do we expect to start seeing the SYSTREG tag catching all the best domains?

With a bit of luck, I should be starting my catching some time next week once all my Nominet applications are processed. I'll be ordering drop lists to go through, then my plan is to whittle the names down to what I think are the best 2 of the day, then either load both of them, or take a chance and load one in the hope it drops before the other one, then load the second one, obviously this will be a bit hit and miss as to what drops first, also less chance of catching with more catchers going after a good name.

Alternatively, try and sort out 4 or 5 fairly good names that perhaps not as many catchers will be going after to increase the chance of getting it, and load them all occasionally and see how it goes, I'll play it by ear to start with and see what suits me best.

Your own drop catch code or someone else's?

You'll have to experiment to determine the best strategy for your own catching purposes, however, us "little guys" do occasionally grab a nice domain, I even managed a LLL.co.uk a few weeks ago :)

If I told you that, I would have to kill you :)

An LLL would be nice to catch at some time, at least they're always wanted by someone, so pretty much guaranteed to make a sale with those, but I won't hold my breath on getting a LLL, though, if one comes my way it's all good, if not, no problem, I can but try.

Going to put in my TAG application right now.

TAG application now completed, now I have to wait a couple of days for their decision:

Nominet service application - Domain Name Registrar
Your application has been submitted

We have received your application.
You should print this page or make a note of the following reference numberApplication reference: xxxxx

What happens next?

A member of our Registrar Support team will review your application and contact you within two working days.

I was expecting to have to pay for it when doing the application, what is the TAG cost anyway, about £50 I seem to remember someone saying?

TAGs are free, you can even have more than one on same account if you want to keep personal/Business separate :)

TAG is free :)

Beat me by 12 seconds

Unless you stipulated in the application (wasn't anywhere obvious when I applied for mine but think it may have changed), they will just allocate what they think. My original one was based on surname which I still keep for personal domaoins and then requested LBE as an additional one.

@ Jimm, yeah, should be receiving that shortly, I've had a reply back from a Nominet agent, he says I can't have SYSTREG as my tag:

Thank you for your email.

Your tag name will need to be similar to or a variant of your account name and as such we cannot allocate you the tag SYSTREG. You will shortly receive an email that will allow you to take our online registrar assessment and details of your tag name will be included.

Why is that then, I thought you could have whatever you wanted for a TAG

[edit]

@ Redbird, just seen your edit above about TAG name allocation.

The TAG you get seems to be based on who does the application. Im only just joining this year myself but I asked for a 3 letter tag which is the first 3 letters of my business name but have got the first 8 letter instead. Neither are anything like my account name...
