The TAG you get seems to be based on who does the application. Im only just joining this year myself but I asked for a 3 letter tag which is the first 3 letters of my business name but have got the first 8 letter instead. Neither are anything like my account name...

I asked for MAT and got it

@ Grant, are you saying Acorn users are mean with their money? :)

Re strategy, there isn't one, I'm a creature of habit, I've only ever sold domains on Acorn since I joined and started domaining, I don't try to sell names elsewhere, I see no reason to change that, I can't be bothered signing up at loads of different sites to try and sell, then there's time wasted chasing around updating posts and seeing if there are offers on x amount of other sites, I'm quite happy with what names go for on here.

Who said anything about other sites?

Can I apply for first dibs on any of your names please?

Ok, finding end users then, that's not always easy though, no guarantee you will find an end user wanting a name, because as has been posted about frequently, a lot of potential end users just don't understand the actual benefits of a nice generic name that fits with exactly what they sell or do online.

I expect everyone would like to sell their good names to an end user for a nice price, but if it was that easy, nobody would be selling decent names on places like Acorn, they would all be going to end users, some people obviously like a quick turnover of names at reseller prices instead of searching and contacting companies, only to get a slap in the face from them.

@ Mat, I passed the registrar assessment test yesterday, was expecting an email with my TAG after that, but nothing turned up, so I sent an email to the Nominet agent who initially contacted me after making my application, he never replied either, so it looks like Monday now before they'll get back to me.

All those questions about support and associated services and blah, made me lose interest in getting a tag, I just couldn't be bothered, I'm going to have to do it eventually tho :(

@ Mat, yeah, and I didn't like school much :)

@ Skinner, do you mean the questions in the actual application about support etc? All I put in those boxes was this:

This TAG that I'm applying is for my personal use only, it will be used for my own benefit for registration and portfolio management, I will not be providing any registration services for any third parties.

I thought about that, but then I figured it would be a hassle at a future date to change it, I'll get around to it eventually :)

@ Skinner, someone pointed out to me on the previous page that you can have more than 1 TAG, like one for business and one for personal use, so you could get one now, and if things change in the future, apply for another one :)

Got my TAG this morning

Wasn't asked for any references from business or bank during the process and got my £500 credit limit straight away.

Going to apply for my membership shortly, I was going to do that at the weekend, but as they don't work weekends, I didn't want my application sitting around in the system for that time.

[edit]

I forgot it was a bank holiday today, but they are obviously working at Nominet, is that usual?

Cheers Ben, my Mrs said it was bank holiday today, told her what you said and she wouldn't have it, until she looked on the calendar :D

Nominet membership now applied for and paid for.

Did you get the one you were after or is it something different?

Well I originally wanted SYSTREG as my TAG, but they wouldn't allow it, said it had to be similar to or a variant of my business name or account username, so I used my username for the TAG. But Systreg is listed as my trading name.
