Does anyone know of any services who let you use their catching system for free in return for a % of sales of any domains you catch?

I'm aware that on Domainlore they only allow Nominet members to use their service if they were members of Nominet before they started offering their catching service, so I couldn't use them.

I'm thinking about getting a TAG and membership, but can't afford the hosting fees for proper hosted services like Dale offers, anyone else out there that offers a free service like Domainlore in return for a % of any catches?

Can anyone give me advice about credit references when getting a TAG, on the obtaining a tag page it says:

To obtain a tag, you need to complete and submit an application form and agree to the terms of our Registrar Agreement and Good Practice Terms. At the same time you are automatically applying to open a credit account with us.

Clicking the credit account link takes you to the fees page where it says:

Credit limit

Provided we receive satisfactory references, we initially set your credit limit at £500, although you may ask us for a higher limit. If your references are unsatisfactory or unavailable, we will ask you to deposit a sum of money against your credit account before you can make any transactions using our registrar systems.

What exactly does it mean by references, references from who? I ain't got anyone to do a reference for me  can it not be done so I don't work on credit at all, like pay Nominet beforehand for domain registrations and top it up when my funds get low?

Just go ahead and sign up Kev.

No references are required, at least they were not for me. I just completed the application and pointed them to my URL with my terms and conditions etc. at nomz.co.uk, completed the education part, and the next day I had a TAG and a £500 credit account.

PM me if you want some more details.

The credit account can be "topped-up" at any time if you don't have a reference, if I remember rightly they put me on a small credit limit and I put in a deposit into my account and ran like this for a short while before getting a "proper" credit account.

I got a £500 credit account straight off without any references, deposit etc..

I guess system has changed a bit as you mention education, I don't recall having anything like that when I joined.

Yeah, I was reading another topic in the tag subforum on here earlier, and found a topic where someone mentioned a test/exam, I thought they were having a laugh, but apparently there is a multiple choice test you have to do as well in order to join, mental

Thanks for the advice re credit and to Jim for advice via PM, it all looks so complicated when you look on the Nominet site, cheers.

Hmm, test is new, guess you can have 2 browsers open and look up the answers as it tells you where the subject matter for the test questions are sourced from.

Bit silly really ain't it, asking a question and then telling you where to find the answer , they should at least do it like a pub quiz format

August 1st to July 31st is when registrations are dated from, so I'm registering on the 1st for my tag and Nominet membership, how long after filling the forms out until your membership and tag comes through? Do you get the DAC access thing at the same time, or buy that seperately at £25 per year?

DAC is another £25/year on top of your membership. From memory mine was all through in a day or 2 but I added the DAC after the membership as I came into catching as an existing member rather than joining for DAC access.

maybe someone can setup a catching service affiliate?

That would be handy as I have wasted traffic for catching services. Gave Dale the option to take it for free but probs not enough traffic to make it worth his while.

We actually do have an affiliate deal, and have had it for a long time, but never advertised it :) Interested parties please PM me.

Probably easier to get your TAG sorted first mate, then pay for a membership once you have that all sorted.

I gave them a quick email before I applied and seemed to have the email contact dealing with it for me as I was doing it.

I applied, did the test and got my TAG on the same day with a £500 credit.

Questions are all based on information found on their site!

Some more questions about the online TAG application form, on the trading details part of it, it says:

Trading Name

By default your account's trading name will be displayed. If you would like a different trading name displayed please enter it:
Use my account's existing trading name (MY USER NAME WAS HERE).
Use a different trading name:

And:

Trading URL

An optional link to a web site of your choice which may be displayed alongside your trading name:
Do not display a trading URL.
Display the following trading URL:

What do I put for trading name, use the name which my current Nominet account is under, or do I tick the use a different trading name box, and if I enter the new name, say i used Systreg for the name, would that name then be my TAG? Or do you choose a tag at some other time after they receive the application?

Then a few of pages later you have the Terms and conditions compliance stuff, nightmare:

You need to confirm how you comply with the requirements of our Domain Name Registrar Agreement. You can either give us a URL where we can find evidence of your compliance or, if publication is pending, you can give us full details of how you will meet the requirements.

Things I have to give details about all this stuff:

1. Terms and conditions awareness

Either by URL or description, show how you make your registrants aware of our Terms and Conditions of Domain Name Registration before the domain name is registered.

2. Charging awareness

Either by URL or description, show how you make your registrants aware of the charges associated with domain name registration, renewal and maintenance. You should also clearly state how you make your registrants aware of any changes to your charges.

3. Related services

Either by URL or description, give details of the related services you provide that are relevant to your customers, with information on how to access these services, any charges payable, and how long you will take to carry out a service. You should also clearly state how you make your customers aware of any changes to your charges.

4. Customer support

Either by URL or description, show how you tell registrants the method, availability and cost of the customer service that you provide (including office opening hours).

5. Code of practice

Either by URL or description, give details of the code of practice that you publish, which outlines a complaint handling and dispute resolution process in the event that a complaint is made.

Obviously, those are all aimed at people intending to run a business selling domain names to the public, which is not what I will be doing.

FagEnd let me copy the terms of service and Nominet rules stuff from his website to post on my site, and I bought a domain name on which to make what will look like an under construction domain sales site, nothing would work on the site, only the links to the TOS and rules etc for Nominet to look at to see I'm complying.

But my problem is, I'm not going to be selling domains to customers, this TAG will be used purely for myself, so I don't know what I'm supposed to put where it says Charging awareness, Related services, Customer support, I'm not doing any of those things, but by having what looks like a business site, they will assume I am doing that, and I wouldn't know how to word something if I was to just make up the terms for those 3 things

So I'm in a bit of a fix, I thought this would be a simple case of register for a tag, pay and get it, wasn't aware that TAG's was all aimed at businesses, and not for individuals, surely they must know domainers use TAGS for their own purpose, and not to actually sell domain names, so why don't they have a TAG specifically for people who are not intending to run a bsuiness.

And what's this other stuff about automatons and pgp's, what's that all about, do I need that stuff?

The new application is quite confusing. Simply put something like "TAG is for personal use only" in each of the boxes.

The Trading Name and Trading URL are basicly what will show up in the whois.

Registrar:
Trading Name [Tag = XXXXX]
URL: http://www.TradingURL.co.uk

Enter what TAG you would like in the other notes section right at the end.

Everything can now be done by the Web Domain Manager in your account.

Just use "handshakes" to accept domains to your account and all the other options such as modify, renew, DNS can all be done at the click of the button.

I told them that my account was for my own benefit for registration and portfolio management, and that I didn't provide registration services for any third parties and they were OK with that. I think it's just that IF you are dealing with the public, then you have to follow certain guidelines.

Cheers Mat, you'd think they would have a check box for the personal use option on the form, instead of assuming everyone is a businessman.

I just noticed in my post above that it says the trading url bit is optional, so I'll leave that blank.

Enter what TAG you would like in the other notes section right at the end.

Gotya, I'll leave it as my current account username for the tradeing name then, and request my tag in the notes section, thanks for the help.

Cheers Steve, I'll use the wording that you and Mat suggest.
