Disgusting Domainlore

That would depend if you can satisfy this

"7.25 The basis of such reluctance in those cases would not, in my view, undermine in any way Nominet’s attachment to open registration. It would simply be to acknowledge that it is difficult to see any reasonable basis whatsoever upon which the registration of a domain name such as rapemyteacher.co.uk could be consistent with any reasonable terms of business that Nominet might draw up."

Can you draw up a reasonable term of business related to your name ?

I wonder if China started like this, with their internet censorship.

Perhaps I shouldn't renew nuclearweapons.co.uk

For me, this is a positive move. Though it would make more sense if a published list of terms simply blocked registrations in the first place :)

Positive in what way?

If some nutter is going to put illegal content up, having to put it up on a domain that doesn't contain the illegal term isn't going to stop them and I'm guessing that's what already happens anyway, you'd have to be pretty dense to put illegal r*pe videos on r*pe.co.uk.

The use/content is the issue, not the domain. Nominet should not be involved in this at all in my opinion.

If you look at the background to the decision, they've pretty much been forced into it.

Must admit I've only skipped through the 40 page report. Looks like they came close to being forced to release the .uk zone file too.

Am I missing something isn't all that has happened is that nominet will have to put in place a system that shows they monitor some dodgy terms and report it to the judiciary/police if they are registered.
They don't make the final decision on should the domain be allowed do they? That will be down to the judiciary/police who I assume will take guidance from the government.

Yes you're missing quite a bit. They want to post review domain names based on a list of [potentially] offensive sexually related words and potentially suspend or delete them. However "beastiality" is currently allowed but "bestiality" might not be.

Who makes the list Nominet or the Police / (Government)

Not 100% sure but see post #80, quote "7.18" in this thread.

That's were the crux of the argument comes if its government controlled then the list will be public record.
If theirs stuff is there that shouldn't be on it then simply let your MP know they wont be getting your vote unless they do something about it.

To be honest with all the sites being blocked by the courts these days
http://assets.virginmedia.com/site-blocked.html

People being arrested for tweets. The NSA/GHCQ monitoring of the internet.

A list of perverted terms being blocked is not that big of deal to me if done openly

It's a big deal because nobody knows where it might end up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...

Then maybe it should be debated what sort of controls should be placed on the internet.

A free open internet is great in principle. The sad thing is there are some sick sick people out there who do and will use the net for evil

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25729140

There has to be some regulation. What this regulation should be, Who makes the rules and who watchers the watchers is all open to debate. But surely as a society we cant just sit back and say anything goes on the net for the sake of freedom of expression.

This was inevitable. Like anything else, it has, (to be seemed) to be regulated in some form. Just like porn mags and movies. Someone somewhere has to decide if it is fit for adults only or the likes of "The Conjuring" should be fit for 15 or whatever.

I have a few porn names and I know I'm in the minority here, but I believe porn should be an opt in rather than an opt out.

I'm also not adversed to a filter on real bad names. If someone wants to educate people on the dangers of bestiality (or whatever) then it should be an opt in. Contact Nominet, make your case, see if they agree and if they do, let the name be registered.

Grants right, if you really want to put some bad stuff out there it will happen anyway but imo you have to do your best to make it harder and off the main stream as possible.

It's the wild west. Anything goes and if you search hard enough for what you "desire" you will find, no matter what regulations/filters are put in place but the UK government has to take a stand because the ISP's were not. So now they are being forced to and it is inevitable Nominet would have to as well.

There is no sane reason to register bestiality other than...
1. The obvious
2. To educate people

Let no2 be an opt in at the discretion of Nominet
