Hopefully people will respect the health workers who are naturally anxious about their own wellbeing and the risk to those who live with them.

There needs to be fixed limits on the time Doctors and Nurses spend at work during this. They will of course try to work until they drop but someone needs to say no on their behalf.

I hear many people concentrating more on
the state of their own health. We may see
a healthier nation come out the other end of this
both in body and mind.

Isn't anyone looking at the figures for Italy and wondering why they're many times higher than most other places?

The Higher Institute of Health Italy, states that the numbers are accounted for differently, and actual deaths (each case is being analysed) may be 12% of the current figures being released.

Hospitals are getting overwhelmed because of the panic...everyone showing symptoms is rocking up at hospital - in the UK we're advised to stay at home.

"The data on mortality are deepening with the medical records of the deceased," said president of Italy's Higher Health Institute (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, or ISS), Silvio Brusaferro, as he presented the new data on Friday.

The picture is very similar to that given by previous statistics in Italy: the median age of the deceased is 80, the majority of victims are male, and they had an average of 2.7 pre-existing health conditions.

Almost all patients were already suffering from serious health problems, including cancer, when the coronavirus infection was detected, according to the newest data from the ISS.

Just three of those who died had no pre-existing health conditions, the data showed.
"Patients who died with coronavirus have an average age of over 80 years, 80.3. The peak of mortality is in the 80-89 year age range. Lethality, ie the number of deaths among the sick, is higher among those over 80," stated Brusaferro.

The fatality rate among those aged under 30 is currently zero, and for under 40s it's 0.3 percent.

The rate rises sharply for over-70s.

The average life expectancy in Italy is 83.

Looks like there is some debate about the German figures. It appears that there are concerns they are only counting the number of deaths directly because of Covid-19, whereas others are reporting number of people who died with Covid-19.

I don't think anyone knows the truth about what is going on at the moment, I know that I don't.

Hospitals are getting overwhelmed because of the panic...

I don't agree. Hospitals are getting overwhelmed because of the virus.

If you look again at that facebook video from Italy, where staff are interviewed and cameras film the wards... those patients aren't just "rocking up" with casual symptoms... they are on the verge of death, many of them unable to get enough oxygen into their blood without help.

This isn't a 'pretend' illness - it's highly contagious, it's deadly.

Hospitals here are in grave danger of being overwhelmed by the virus too, if people keep playing down the virus. Then people won't bother to distance from each other, and they'll spread the disease to more people.

Why do you think so many countries are 'locking down' and calling for distancing? Why do you think so many governments are taking a huge financial hit which will lead to recession? I'd seriously like to know why you think they are, if it's only like seasonal flu. Are we talking conspiracy here? Or all these world leaders, and their resources, and advice... they've all got it wrong?

This is a crisis. It needs practical actions, and support for healthcare staff, and a collective recognition that this is far different in scale to 'flu'.

The equation is pretty simple: let people all socialise as usual = 100,000s more people will die.

And no, they would not all have died anyway. Most would have lived years longer. If people are selfish they will steal those years from them.

The principal here is not exactly rocket science, the virus is spread through close contact, have no close contact and it cannot spread. The cost of such a simple solution economically is catastrophic but governments have no choice. Fortunately we have a strong majority government, which is very patriotic, so the democratic support of the people to deal with the problem. That was surely a very timely god send.

FYI, the daily updates provided by the Government on the spread of the coronavirus are becoming less and less reliable, because their test regime is faltering.

Now, they're only testing people admitted to hospital. But most people never make it that far. Most self-isolate at home. Others call "111" but get dissuaded to take it further (Twitter is full of cases of people describing a raft of symptoms but complaining that "111" turned them away.) Only the very, very sickest are making it to hospital - and to being given a test.

Compare these two snapshots summarising the global spread of the coronavirus, taken approximately 30 hours apart... Please be patient, and look back and forth between the graphs until the difference leaps out at you.

Top one is the situation as of yesterday 5:40 am. Bottom one is of the situation today 11:40am.

(All data from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ )

You can really see the exponential growth kicking in, with afterburners on.

Things are going to get much, much, much worse before they get better.

That is the only reality that matters here.

The bigger the land mass and the more movement of people, the more potential to spread. The UK is in a good position if the big pockets of infection can be isolated, then we can probably beat this more effectively than other countries and continents. I think less whinging and complaining and more complying to regulations will see us through this.

Thanks Edwin. I must confess (not having looked at graphs properly since I left school) that it took a few moments for the penny to drop.

Basically these seem to be saying around 30k new cases and 1.5k deaths worldwide just in the past 1-2 days, with each future day's stats looking set to be dramatically worse than the day that preceded it.

The number of cases has roughly doubled over the past week, and the death toll has doubled since Tuesday. With the sharp upward spike, we won't need to wait even that long (nothing like it) for the numbers to double again.

We'll have to agree to disagree then.

Why are so many countries 'locking down' …I don't know...this is my point.

Drilling down in to the figures doesn't show the scale of problem to warrant such draconian measures. But on the other hand, this crisis is proving to be great news for groups who want to implement certain things such as; cashless society; crashing the current financial system and replace with a new one; controlling peoples movements; making more people dependant on the state; increase of and making mandatory vaccines. I could go on.

These are a lot of coincidences in a world where wise people say there are no coincidences.

Now I'm not saying CV isn't a real disease. I do think that the seriousness is being overstated greatly. And as always, there are some people who are benefiting from it.

Before anyone shouts 'conspiracy theory' - the above is all true, not theory. There are people pushing for those things, and this crisis ticks all their boxes and more. How lucky is that for them? Can we say 'coincidence theory'?

Yes. That's exactly spot on.

Any chance of you giving us a bullet point summary of all the things you think are really going on here? Come on Brewsters, pin your colours to the mast rather than coming across as a flamer.

Driving around my local town today and you would struggle to notice any difference. Even wetherspoons is open and serving. Groups of kids at the bus station. Groups of kids outside KFC. I went for a walk along a bike track with my Mrs and son (aged 4) to get out of the house and get some fresh air and sun. I saw lots of sensible people on a family walk getting out of the house but also saw lots of groups of people,. Too many to live together. The message is no way getting through. The situation is dangerous

Brewster I don't think your views are that hard to believe. the speed of this situation is unbelievable. The spread even now to south Africa , America and Australia is the fastest and more global than anything in the past. It would only work though if people didn't believe your suggestions.

I can't really spell it out any simpler...I'd do pictures but I'm crap at drawing.

Flaming? Is having an opinion that doesn't match the majority flaming? I thought this was a discussion.
