There are actually over 100 factors that go into Google's "secret sauce" ranking algorithm. Some are subject to heavy debate in the webmaster community, others are pretty much accepted as fact. So while the book may get you started, it's only going to take you perhaps 70% of the way at best.
Of course, if the niche you're aiming at isn't that competitive, that's no problem since that's all you'll need. But if you're going for something really heavily contested, you're going to need a LOT more than good content plus some Google PR.
Incidentally, you may find some of the information on my site Incoming Links Development Guide and Directory instructive. Perhaps another small piece of the overall SEO jigsaw, at least.
adsense search box with no content on the page...?? do you have to be a privileged publisher for that
No Google ad may be placed on any non-content-based pages.
No Google ad or Google search box may be displayed on any domain parking websites, pop-ups, pop-unders, or in any email.
No Google ad may be placed on pages published specifically for the purpose of showing ads, whether or not the page content is relevant.
"Google Inc., which runs the largest ad network on the Internet, is making millions of dollars a year by filling otherwise unused Web sites with ads. In many instances, these ad-filled pages appear when users mistype an Internet address, such as "BistBuy.com.""
And despite the fact that 'they are not evil' google does like to make money.
I've seen numerous reports of Adsense accounts being cancelled but it seems to be mainly for click fraud.
Incidentally wanted to say i really like your sites, they have a nice feel to them & very easy on the eye.
I like the fact they have a similar feel to them.
Development is definitely the way forward. Obviously domainers can't develop them all, but i'm trying to get a number up & running. My skills are as basic as they get, so i have to use a developer for good ones.
Good luck anyway.

Don't let the developers talk you into an overly complex system. I looked at XHTML (using div's etc) and the cross browser compatabilities put me off.
If you are trying to make a business then you need a lot of pages. You'll probably get $1 to $4 per page per month so 10 pages ain't going to make you rich. I would say that you will need some form of content management system. You could use something like coldfusion from mysql - whatever just make sure it's easy to maintain. If you get a whizz bang guy to do your pages then a. your revenue will get eaten up in development and b. there will only be him/her who can maintain it. You will want to make changes and £100 per button will take some recovering.
Sourcing content (that has to be unique) is half the problem though there are many forums where you can look to do this.
Video is really 'of the moment' and it does seem as easy to source conent. We are converting to flash video (flv) and hosting on streaming servers (which are cheap). It would maybe seem somewhat easier to make something 'edgy' that might catch on. When Google has pre-roll ads there's talk of $5 - $25 cpm so if you have a landing page and you can pre-roll the ads and you get 90,000 visitors a month then you could get up to $2250 per month from the video and some from your clips. It's a bit of work though - not quite pointing to a sedo landing page. There is also some cost for video hosting. I think the company we use start their hosting at $15 per month for 5gb and you can figure on a 2 min video being 2MB or thereabouts.
Good luck - let me know when you have something up - it's interesting.
Hi,
thanks for all the advice. I have only tinkered with the most basic of html & instant sites so far. I want to learn more html before moving onto dreamweaver etc as i think can only help if you have a grounding in first instance.
Have a 'big' project, for me anyway, with a developer. Got a great price & he has become quite a good mate, but he is taking months at present to finish.
I have a couple of real premium .coms i want to develop as think terrible waste to park. They're on my list but have a serious lack of funds at mo & cards sky high, so want to sell some domains & then crack on with development.
Thanks a lot. Pred :-D
