that's what I thought, they have the .gov.uk and don't need the .uk. Otherwise they would have attempted to take the .co.uk off the current owner.

I'll say this again. Nominet had complaints from local councils that premium domains of strategic public interest e.g. Police.uk, London.uk, Sheffield.uk, should maybe be limited as they will create confusion between the official London.gov.uk, Sheffield.ac.uk sites etc.

The fact that .uk is an open SLD is irrelevant. Nominet has government and public interests to protect, therefore it wouldn't surprise me to see certain .uk domains not released.

The obvious problem with opening the 2nd level is that it even creates confusion with government/university/education websites.

Great, so Nominet could hold back certain domains, which those in Government say could cause confusion between .uk and .gov.uk or .ac.uk, but it's ok to release millions of other domains on .uk, and that wont cause any confusion at all with .co.uk will it, bloody laughable ain't it

It's why I'm so surprised they're trying again at it.

People are only talking about .co.uk/org.uk/me.uk in this thread, but think about all the confusion when you have .uk, then the following:

.co.uk
.gov.uk
.ac.uk
.org.uk
.me.uk

Opening the 2nd level is messy. All 5 of those other domain extensions will lose a large degree of autonomy for their respective purpose.

For instance, why should a university operate on .ac.uk when they could get .uk? Why should a charity operate on .org.uk when they could have .uk? Why should a government site operate on .gov.uk when they could have .uk (e.g. tfl.uk).

Before people say, well there was no confusion between .co.uk and .gov.uk websites, that's apples and oranges. Once you open the 2nd level, it does create confusion.

I stand to lose 2 of my top 5 premium domains to .org.uk holders under this proposal. I am an end user who has paid £thousands for what I thought would remain the authority domain - needless to say I am not happy.
