Would you register .Wales and .Cymru domain names ?

Some G searches:

Plaid Cymru ranks both .wales and .cymru

Lib dem wales .wales ranks first

Fork 2 fork .wales ranks first

ffoton ranks third, but then Google isn't very good with the Welsh language.

Though why I am encouraging anyone to hoard Welsh domains I don't know. In fact, forget the above, .wales will never rank!

Anyone interested in adding some .wales names to their portfolio, I'll listen to offers on some of mine.

Would anyone care to hazard a guess at what percentage of .wales/ .cymru domains have been registered by domainers? Or for a rough idea, if someone has the zone file, do you have a quick way of seeing how many domains have been registered in total and how many unique registrants there are?

I remember when .info and .biz were were launched, most of the generic domains were snapped up by domainers who just parked the domains. With so few websites on those extensions appearing in the SERPs, for years there was hardly any public awareness that those extensions existed and since all the half-decent names had already gone anyway, demand for new registrations in those extensions quickly tailed off. So domainers killed off the domains.

I wonder how many of the new Welsh domains will just remain parked or forwarding to a 'for sale' page. There also seem to be an awful lot of alternatives now for a prospective Welsh website (even ignoring the flurry of new generic tlds): .co.uk, .com, .org.uk, .uk, .wales, .cymru!

I think its got a good chance of surviving, the Welsh government has adopted and is using .cymru and .wales

That's a great endorsement!

Could do with moving digital.wales on if the right offer comes my way - give us a shout.

That is a great name and I'm sure it will not be long before somebody takes that off your hands.

I attend networking meetings now and again around Cardiff and Digital.Wales is a perfect fit for some of the companies attending these meetings.

I would suggest that you contact the FSB here: http://www.fsb.org.uk/wales

This would be a good place to start.

Good luck!

Digital Wales perhaps? The gov and councils bid for a few premiums so I understand, though not a lot. Someone said they only paid £1200 for cardiff.wales.

Thanks fellas :)

I checked this one ages ago and it wasn't available to reg, just checked again and it was so I thought "why not":

Pontypool.wales

decent population, hotels, B&Bs, rugby etc

Nice to see someone developing one of these domains. Good luck with that.

Is there any website that says the numbers of domains registered in .wales versus .cymru?

Type into google:

site:.wales

Site:.cymru

It will give you an indication of what is index in google.

Are you a TAG holder there's a bit of discussion on the nominet forum about the numbers all the premiums weren't taken from memory around 800 .wales premiums were taken and 150 or so .cymru

That was the premiums so I be very surprised if there were more than 5000 in total

Ok just had a look at some other old threads 5000 in the first 24 hours - so my last estimate was a bit low still not great though I guess.

I'm in two minds if I should start doing something with bingo put out a few feelers to potential end users on Thursday no interest as yet though

In my personal opinion much of the success of a registration in the .wales and .cymru gTLD will be down to how relevant it is to both the country of Wales and the subject of the presumed web site it resolves to. If I were registering within the gTLD I'd probably look at Welsh tourism and Welsh cottage industries where being Welsh or coming from Wales is a significant attribute in the overall business. I wouldn't expect a major company based in Wales to adopt a domain within either gTLD unless their outputs were heavily tied to Welshness or Wales as a country.

Spot on.

Many different MTA's exist and numerous versions of each.

Gmail, and Google Apps For Work, handles them without problem, but as you say, older, smaller, less supported may not.

..but the potential for email difficulties might be the tipping point for small businesses choosing between the tried and tested .com/.co.uk or any new gTLDs as their domain name for day to day business communication

I doubt it would occur to most small businesses, most of whom have no idea how such things work.

Yes, you're spot on!

Thank goodness I live and work in Wales and have many network connections. I will be promoting .wales and .cymru to everyone i do business with.

I mentioned .wales to a wine company owner i know and they registered WineTasting.wales ! An end user who will run her blog off this!
Just like me, mobility.wales is another business venture of mine, putting a site on it that will generate money is the end game, whether it takes me hour to build or 6 months to build.
