Has anyone heard of the WiBro rush that has been going on for a while now?
All the "good" WiBro .com domains are gone by now.
Does wibro have any future in the UK market?
I happen to own a few domains (such as wibromibilephones.co.uk)but I am not sure of its marketing potential. Anybody has any usefull info on this subject?

Thanks
Petros

Hi petrosc,

Like a LOT of current and emerging technologies in the telecommunications sector WiBro like the others are stop gaps until 4G comes along (see link: http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/imt-2000/documents/Busan/Session3_Yoon.pdf), so you may be lucky, you may not, it's a bit of a gamble. On the other hand 4G is going to be something special (trust me!), unlike 3G which has ended up as a bit of a damp squid  Unfortunately 4G isn't going to be commercially available for another 5 years or so :( ...And I guess you probably don't want to wait that long

Cheers,

Sneezycheese.

Never heard of "WiBro" until your post, is it even available in the UK yet?

admin, wibro stands for wireless broadband. Its a technology allowing wireless internet access (Mbps) to systems such as mobiles and notebooks. It looks really promising. Its not available in the UK yet and god knows if its ever going to be. If it is though then I'm rich:) What I wanted to know was if someone has "inside info on this", if there was or going to be any movement with the UK telcos. WiBro will be sponsoring the winter olympics in italy, an italian telco signed an agreement with korea to bring wibro technology to italy. I guess something like that could happen for UK too. God knows.

and Sneezycheese, thank you for your reply, the pdf presentation was very interesting;)

Thank you both for your replies,
cheers

Wibro doesn't sound very UK centric, it reminds me too much of inner city hoods, I can't see that catching on, they may call it something else. Then again...

It's like an american wheelchair maker calling their wheelchairs spaz machines or something like that, it doesn't translate well.

or the Swedish ? calling their fridges "smeg"

T. Italia eyes WiBro wireless broadband from 2007
TURIN, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Telecom Italia will launch WiBro services in Italy from early 2007 after testing the wireless broadband technology at the Turin Winter Olympics, CEO Riccardo Ruggiero said on Friday. Telecom Italia had said it would set up some 50 demonstration terminals equipped with WiBro -- the mobile, South Korean version of wireless service WiMax -- at the Winter Games, in the first large-scale demonstration outside Korea. "(Telecom Italia mobile arm) TIM will progressively introduce a service based on WiBro technology from early 2007," Ruggiero told a news conference.
"From 2006-2007 you will be able to have multimedia available anytime and anywhere you want."

Ruggiero, who said early testing at the Olympics would look at WiBro coverage, declined to detail the investment involved.

Korea's Samsung Electronics is due to provide the handsets by June.

Former monopoly Telecom Italia is racing to claim a bigger slice of the mobile and Internet market and says it will be the first in Europe to offer WiBro.

WiBro services -- which allows people on the road access to the Internet at the speed of current fixed-line broadband connections -- are expected to boost the income of telecoms companies in mature markets while facilitating education and healthcare in rural areas.

I think my Gamble is going to pay off bigtime!!!!!!

Here's another one---Wibro Launching in Canada

The Ministry of Information and Communication said on January 25 that Silicon Valley Overseas IT Support Center (iPARK) at the Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency exchanged a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in DMB and Wibro with the Telecommunication Laboratories, the largest information and telecommunication laboratory in Canada.

The ministry discussed with the authorities of Canada federal government and Alberta provincial government about a pilot service related to DMB and Wibro in the fourth quarter of this year and decided to aggressively support the MOU between KIPA and TR labs.

DMB developed by a domestic technology has made the fourth debut on overseas stage following Germany that agreed to a pilot broadcasting service for the relay broadcasting of the World Cup in last April, England and Mexico in last September. Wibro is also shifting up gear to break into global market.

The two parties agreed to cooperate in conducting a pilot business in such areas as DMB, Wibro, home network and digital contents and exchanging information, a joint seminar and a joint incubating. They also agreed to cooperate in utilizing research facilities and test infra of TR labs, participating in joint research, taking a field trip for an advance technology and developing human resources.

Now that the MOU includes the pilot program where both governments and an private enterprise participate focusing on spreading DMB and Wibro, the Alberta provincial government, the Canada federal government and the Ministry of Information and Communication discussed to shape it together.

¡°We will form a taskforce team where both governments, laboratories, communication businesses and manufacturing companies participate soon and announce the result discussed in the APEC information and communication meeting held in Calgary in upcoming April.¡± ¡°We expect them to extend to across the North America,¡± said an official of the ministry

The main reason 3g was a 'damp squib' was the £22.5 billion quid operators had to fork out for licenses to run the stuff.

I believe wimax will be the one...well hopefully, as i have voipwimax .co.uk and wi-max .org.uk :)

You might want to read this about Wimax delayed

Potential WiMax users left waiting
by Antony Savvas
Thursday 19 January 2006
The certification of the first official WiMax long-range wireless broadband has been delayed.

The first certifications had been expected by the end of last year, but the WiMax Forum industry group has explained that last minute tests in the certification process had delayed the commercial release of products.

The certification process is designed to ensure different WiMax products work with each other, but tests have been required with the small number of products currently up for certification.

WiMax is seen as an ideal way to provide broadband to rural areas that do not currently have a cable broadband network in place, as well as being a quick connectivity solution to set up where wireless broadband is needed.

The WiMax Forum said certification for at least three different products was now imminent, although this certification will only cover basic connectivity.

Additional features such as security and guaranteed quality of service will come out of later tests.

Companies considering WiMax may therefore have to wait some time before they can specify a WiMax solution that addresses all their needs.

…Yup, definitely didn’t help.

The main problem was that the 3G business model was technology led rather than market led. So the ‘added value’ element to the consumer just wasn’t there. I think an awful lot of lessons have been learnt, from what has become a very expensive (albeit valuable) exercise.

I've just spotted that www.wibro360.com is still available ;)

A lot of the best wibro .com registrations were in mid 2004. The realisation time for these technologies is always a few years at least. It just shows how close you have to be to the developing technologies to stand a chance of getting the best domains.

Good luck to you, wibroman.

Thanks! I have been following Wibro for about 1 year.I have studied deeply the past 6 months. Its worth the gamble.

Wibro has alot going for itself. Its Mobile.Plus they are already said the price for customers will be alot cheaper then wimax.
