Drop Catching Incentive

I tend to follow Edwin's views here.

If you have built a business that can generate a six figure income - which includes a very healthy profit margin - then the most important thing to do for that business now is market it.

What better marketing can a drop catching service have than some proven success on catching premium names and people like us singing their praises?

A catcher that never seems to catch a good name for anyone isn't really marketing their business all that well (whether or not they are being cute or just rubbish!).

Losing out on the odd potential £5K domain (if the right buyer is about) to a domainer seems a sensible marketing plan to me provided they make sure the publicity is "got out". It's better than funding endless Adwords campaigns out of your own pocket!

You've got to laugh i suppose. Get those requests in quick before the site services are pulled! :D

Edwin,

I agree with what you're saying in principle, but not with the numbers put forward. From a business persepctive it makes sense but there are technical factors that limit what is possible.

Firstly as far as I remember Chris charges 15 quid a name and not 30. I hope he does catch 10 names a day and more for for people, he offers a good service and seems like a nice bloke.

However, even DM with there monster time delay DAC queries would still be lucky to secure that many names a day unless they were real dross IMO.

It's a simple maths excercise, the rub is you cannot chase even 10 C grade names per day competetively as a public catcher when a private catchers are blowing their whole 430K per day on one name, and given how competetive it is, most private catchers with a decent set-up consider it a successful day if they get one name a day. Even domain lore hosting customers regularly get beaten to names by private catchers, and there are no question marks as to the ability of Deny's system to catch names.

Look at Doodelbugs comments - DM booked 100, caught nothing for him.

As for the it's ok to let 5K names slip through because as steady stream of income will cover it, I don't buy that. Any 5K name that drops will go to one of a small number of private catchers whose query was right on the nose when the name dropped - eg. 2 ms max away. Or zero ms's away, eg. they came off a DAC block and their queries flushed through as the name became available.

Most private catchers advertise when they have a spot available as they don't often catch for people. So keep an eye out for them.

You can also post a date request (NOT a name, as alerts everyone to it), so post like "£? Catch Wanted for 17th" and see who replies :)

The public catchers are:
Caught.co.uk
Dropsystem.co.uk
Dacr.co.uk
domainrecover.net
detagged.co.uk

Id try and get some private catchers aswell if you want the best chance possible

Hi guys

I'm an end user, and discovered this forum when researching about how to drop catch a .co.uk that I was after. This particular thread caught my attention, and I just wanted to post my experiences as an end user, for anyone else in a similar position to me.

Based on the advice contained in this thread, I booked my catch (which was for 14 April) with caught, dropsystem, dacr, domainrecover and domainmonster. Dropsystem required a £30 prepay, but promise to refund it if they don't catch for you.

I looked at detagged but they also require a prepay. I got no reply to my enquiry about refunding in the event of a failed catch, so I didn't book a slot with them.

The most professional pre-catch service was from domainmonster, really easy interface (for an end user), I even got something through the post from them.

The dacr interface was a bit baffling but I'm guessing the target audience for this site possibly isn't end users?

Dropsystem refunded my £30 promptly on request this morning, so no problems there.

I also booked a slot with two private catchers on here - doing everything by PM with one private catcher was really easy; the other private catcher referred me to a rather anonymous webpage, which was ok but I wouldn't have used this without the PM correspondence first.

Thanks again for the info that you provide here, really useful, and thanks in particular to the two private catchers that I had correspondence with.

Cheers
Jimmy

I can't believe you just wrote all that without telling us whether you got the domain or not!

Domain monster had a monster day today :)

My catch by them beat 2 private catchers, and 3 public.

(I assume the private catchers went for it since it dropped after the LLL).
