What is the secret?

If you have 1 server running 1 script, 2 simultaneous connections and only polling for 1 domain then something is fishy?
I'm sure everyone is polling as quickly as each other and all sending mails as quickly as each other, so that then points to an unlevel playing field.

Not pointing fingers just saying if were all running optimised scripts and mails and 2 people are getting all the decent domains then it's doubtful that its a level playing field.

From what I understand (and I'm no programmer) there is a mail queue and whoever is at the front of that queue when a name drops gets the domain, as simple as that.

Now the question is have the successful catchers found a way of pushing their email to the front of the queue, have they found a way of slowing other emails down or have they found a way of preempting the drop due to some 'feature' of the Nominet system.

Whichever one it is good luck to them, if I knew how to do it then I might start catching again

Interesting point.

One question I would ask Jay (if hes still about) is has Nominet ever found a catcher fiddling with and/or abusing Nominets email systems?

If so what action was taken?

Cheers,
Rob.

I can't answer that as I'm not Jay "Arfur" Daley, but I do remember reading something last year (or was it the year before) about Nominet investing in some form of firewall that allowed them to limit concurrent connections to the email servers.

I'll have a search around and see if I can find it...

Edit: No I can't seem to find it, anyone else remember it?

it's more than a feature (c) than an optimization or flaw.

I wonder how much it would cost to know that feature :)

I am sure its outta my pocket but someones gotta ask! :)

Either of those options would be impossible to do without some sort of control over nominet's email system...

Yes regularly. I don't think anyone has gained an advantage by it, but it has caused our systems to crash or other problems.

They were warned and they stopped. Nobody has yet disregarded a warning.

haha......

Jay, one more question since you're following this thread.

Is it possible for someone to keep their email right at the front of the queue until the vital moment?

Cheers

Paul

/QUOTE]

An email only enters the queue when CR+LF DOT CR+LF is sent to terminate the mail transfer. It then joins the back of the queue.

There are several people here who know and make use of that. I expect that tomorrow there will be dozens of people hitting DAC as fast as they can and when they see gse.co.uk drop, they will fire off the email in a few milliseconds.

However the usual suspect will already have an email in the queue and that defies probability.

So please look at your logs, see how it was done and fix it.

^^ "..when they see gse.co.uk drop.."

Without going off on a tangent, but seeing as you've referred to an LLL domain, why is there such a scramble for these? They seem to appear on a regular basis after all, and in most cases the letter configurations seem to mark them out as resale items only.

I can't quite work you out Colin, 2 months ago you were praising those doing better for yourself, and stated publically that you thought the playing field looked level. Now you seem to have changed your mind? Can i ask why your view on the matter has changed in such a short space of time?

Finally, as even you have stated before in your previous posts, the prizes go to those who have put the most time and effort into researching their line of business (not just dropcatching, but any industry). Why would Nominet suddenly decide that this is not the case and "fix it"? Why do you deserve to catch gse.co.uk tomorrow Colin? As opposed to someone else who has put the time and effort, shed blood and tear researching and developing?

Instead, you (amongst others) seem to be "guessing" on possible explanations and conspiracies, (amongst making yourselves look incredibly foolish in the process).

Two months is a long time in this game. Then it was level, now it isn't. I don't think I look that stupid, if you take a broad enough view.

I don't deserve to catch any domain, but I would like to feel that I have a fair chance.

chances were and are equal to everyone.

for example, can you figure out how to hack exponent of RSA algorithm used in PGP to set it artificially weak, so your signature verifies about 50 times faster..?

is it a level playing field?? study and get onto another level.

usually, winners are those who have more money or power.

here it's those who r clever.
you don't like it, i know.
