If a major brand like a real insurer wanted to build an "Elephant" type site on it, they'd perhaps have no choice but to take other typos seriously - they'd end up leaking 10,000's of visitors a month I reckon.

I see your point but think people would soon learn how to spell umbrella, don't you.

I think you're massively over estimating the intelligence of the general public

They don't need to learn anyway - spell it wrong, land on a MFA/parked page that has car insurance links on it, and click one of those. They still got their car insurance quote so probably don't care.

Monkey has a point you know. I've seen first hand people type in 'google.com' into Google search.....

Typing it into Google would probably be better for the site owner - at least its likely to trigger a 'did you mean...' and divert them to the right page. If they do it straight into the url bar, it won't.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?site=&source=hp&q=elefant.co.uk - go directly to elefant.co.uk and you'll get a parked page full of competitors ads

Mate I meant literally typing in Google.com into the Google search box to get to Google.com before actually searching for what they wanted to search for.. if that makes sense lol.

I agree with this too. Most people I watch use the internet use google rather than typing in addresses automatically. Doesn't matter for brands I guess but could be important for those relying on other marketing methods for their traffic (e.g. leaflets, newspaper ads, radio etc).

Stephen.

Yup I know what you mean, just pointing out if people do something stupid like that with a typo though its not that bad - you'll get the traffic anyway

Google now doesn't ask - it automatically corrects and says "Showing results for..."

Thats not quite true... it can do either. I think the more certain they are you meant the other one, the more likely they are to auto correct and show the results. For a major brand they're far more likely to do what you're saying though.

Sorry but I need to blank this one out as its my own site and I don't want to post the url... I'm sure if anyone cares they can find some examples though :D

That's for urls, but not for search terms.

Both of my examples are the same - elefant.co.uk is a url and sends you straight to elephant.com.

In my blacked out one, I'm still searching for a url and its showing the results that I asked for, but giving me a 'did you mean...' link to modify the search if I want.

If I put elefant.co.uk into Google it returns:

Showing results for elephant.co.uk

Talk about people not being able to spell is a red herring. It could be applied to countless domain names.

Most people looking for payroll solutions will be able to spell umbrella.

Yes, and there are other examples where if you put 'domain.co.uk' in it will show you the results for 'domain.co.uk' and say did you mean... and suggest something else for you.

Most people looking for payroll solutions will be able to spell umbrella.

I know that. I was just saying if you wanted to use the domain for something mainstream and clearly targeted to less intelligent people, the spelling becomes an issue, which directly effects the price.

You can attempt to discredit the value of any domain name, to try to discredit umbrella on the basis of potential typo's is stretching it to the extreme.

I'm not trying to discredit it - I already said I think it went for a fair price.

There is nothing extreme about it - whats easier to spell for a typical car insurance searcher? Elephant, Tiger, GoCompare, MoneySuperMarket or Umbrella?

If you are going to bleed typeins to parked pages then thats a major issue and its clearly going to have an effect on purchase price (or whether you even buy it at all)

Umbrella

Seriously, if I was the OP I would be wondering why I even bothered starting the thread.

The inability of some to spell umbrella correctly has zero bearing on its value.

So is it a positive feature that you could leak traffic trying to get to your site, straight to competitors (via ads on parked typo domains) ??

Its foolish to think hard to spell domains aren't worth less than equivalent easy to spell ones. Common sense tells you that.

But you can't get a much easier name to spell than umbrella.
You are not trying to buy it are you;)

Umbrella has many positive connotations re "cover" that tiger doesn't - that in itself brings extra value to the table.

It's foolish to obsess over typos.

My last post on this. Too many threads on acorn now descend into farce.
