.uk V2.0 Questions to Nominet & their Answers

Status
Not open for further replies.
Durban, South Africa

No idea about the third round table.

Thanks for the view on the top people attending the post AGM round table, better than in V1 when neither was at any of the round tables or the Nominet open day meeting.

I have been advised that the 3rd round table was in Durban, South Africa at the ICANN meeting.

I have no other details of who or how many attended or what was said?

Pity if I would have known, I might have been able to add a tax deductible visit to SA!

Reply on the way?

Yesterday, after 10 reminder emails to Nominet about my un-published and unanswered blog comment posts, I have received a email reply from Nominet saying:

will be responding to your blog comments shortly

I never received a response from nominet but I only sent them 4 emails. Well done Stephen - I'm going to send another reminder right now.

7th - 8th August

I asked Nominet;

Why was the comments on the blog suspended?

Reply;

Due to the volume and nature of complaints received recently, we have taken the decision to close the blog to comment.

Bullshit answer of course.

Can I sell a load of broken crud on ebay and suspend my feedback please because I don't like what people are saying ? cheers :)

Haha, is that genuine...? The volume of complaints about this got that bad that Nominet can't even spin it.....

not be publishing any of the comments already submitted

Just received this email from Nominet.

Dear Stephen,

Apologies for the delay in responding to you.

We would like to encourage anyone with views on our proposals for second level registration to give feedback as part of the current consultation process. For this reason, we have closed the comments on this post and will not be publishing any of the comments already submitted.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Kind regards.

The comments posted and accepted were "questions" not feedback, so I cannot see this as a reason!

Email sent back to Nominet:

Very disappointed in your action as well as the 3 weeks it has taken to reply on this subject.

The comments posted on the blog were legitimate questions about .uk, that in my opinion require answers.

They are not views on the .uk proposal which I understand should be sent through the consultation process.

I would respectively request that you review the “questions” I posted and reconsider your decision to displaying them on the blog.

Rgds
Stephen

Unfortunately nothing remotely surprising in their answer.

Nominet have shown all through the process, since the first face-to-face sessions for V1, that they are not in the business of supplying answers.

That's the way they see the consultation, with themselves as a "black hole" that absorbs opinions and feedback, but which releases nothing at all for the duration of the consultation process.

There's nothing anyone can do externally to force answers when none are forthcoming. If there was, we'd have them already - it's not for want of trying!

Just saw the response you got from nominet Stephen. Exactly the same response as mine.

And here's my response:

Dear Phil

Thank you for your reply. I note your explanation and I confirm that I will be responding to your consultation in the normal way, but Mrs Cowley's blog invited comments and I went to the trouble of making a comment before you suspended the comments facility. I would ask that you add my comment to that blog page immediately. Please confirm that you will do this. Thank you.

Kind regards,

Nigel

misinterpreted those Nominet statements

Unfortunately nothing remotely surprising in their answer.

Nominet have shown all through the process, since the first face-to-face sessions for V1, that they are not in the business of supplying answers.

That's the way they see the consultation, with themselves as a "black hole" that absorbs opinions and feedback, but which releases nothing at all for the duration of the consultation process.

Well I thought there may be a change at the end of the round table (10th July).
Nominet stated it took the points on board made about the previous consultation process
and it would endeavour to be more transparent and answer questions raised about .uk.

Also the comment on Lesley Cowley's blog on 15th July:
We listened to the feedback that we received and we have adapted the proposals in response.
As promised, we have now put our revised proposals up for public scrutiny once again.

And the Chairs statement in the recently published 2012 Nominet financial statements:

This changing landscape may also mean taking what might appear to be bold moves.

For example, our recent exploration of combining opening up registrations at the second level
with enhanced security features, which has become known as direct.uk.

Even though this issue had been considered previously in the UK and
elsewhere in the world in different forms, given the changing competitive landscape
it is legitimate for us to look at it again to assess how the environment may have changed.

As ever, listening to the views of stakeholders is a key part
of our decision making process regarding whether to proceed.

Plus:

An important part of our public interest work involves taking a responsible approach to the .uk domain name space.
We have continued to put the .uk policy process, which underpins the way in which the .uk domain space operates, to the test.

There has been further engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, bringing opposing viewpoints together so we can
ensure all perspectives are taken into account and inform decision making.

Obviously I have misinterpreted those Nominet statements, it seems leopards don't change their spots!

Remember what the judge said about her.......

"Lesley Cowley's evidence was that she had to look at the final version to recall the position. The Tribunal finds that explanation lacks credibility"

Google...

Noun
The quality of being trusted: "the government's loss of credibility".
The quality of being convincing or believable: "the book's anecdotes have scant regard for credibility".
Synonyms
plausibility - authenticity - reliability

what is a relevant question?

What Nominet actually said is that they would be updating their Q&A, which they have done twice so far.

http://www.nominet.org.uk/how-parti...licy-discussions-and-consultations/SLDR-qanda

Their responses may be inadequate or lacking, but they are providing feedback in the way they've defined it.

Don't agree on the way they have defined it. Nominet were not that specific at the .uk round table and simply stated that they would be answering my questions raised about .uk.

They also hold round table meetings were the point is to ask and receive answers, although those Q & A never see the light of day on the Nominet website.

In an email to me they stated they would they would consider posting some of my questions raised as Q & A (which they did 19 and 23 July) and I understand that that makes some sense.

But I do accept that is what they are doing but it doesn't have to be this way, it is the way Nominet have decided to actually act.

However I do object to the Nominet view that they alone should decide what is a relevant question to comment on,
in addition to their weak and often lacking answers that don't really answer the question raised in many cases.

Nominet are simply hiding important questions they simply don't want to respond to.

I've come to the conclusion that Nominet can do what they want, and do not need to answer to anyone. They know this and so that is what they are doing.

Didn't you say you sent them 10 emails regarding the one subject? If that was true then you can't really complain when they get sick of it and just refuse to enter into correspondence and/or let blog comments go live.

Its a time consuming job dealing with enquiries/blog comments and so on and you're certainly not making it easy for them :D

100% Nominet's decision

The 10 emails were reminders to Nominet that were sent over a period of 3 weeks when they had not published the accepted blog questions that I posted.

Over that time I did not even receive an acknowledgement from Nominet that the matter was being looked into.

I was one of at least 5 people who made postings on the blog in the period 26-29 July, none of those postings were published but all were accepted before the postings were closed.

I believe Nominet are making a mistake, it will look like they are censoring any debate about .uk.

I would rather deal with the issues and questions raised about .uk and do not want to see the good name of Nominet brought into any disrepute but it is 100% Nominet's decision not to post the questions or request they are answered in a different way and ask me to accept that they are not posted, rather than dictate the solution they have created.
