.UK Announced

If you're wealthy, have a phenomenal portfolio of trademarks, don't have a developed web site on .co.uk, haven't invested in .co.uk, eligible for Nominets "Long Term Incentive Plan" or delusional then direct.uk may be for you.

lol Sean,

The response.

Our suggestion is that you go ahead with the new .uk domain as set out in your paper
and that you announce your intention to bring all of the other domains ending in uk
into an improved security regime.

Sounds like they are in favour.

Thanks for that link Edwin.

So are all you experienced domainers against it completely? Or just against it in its current form?

Thanks

I'm just playing devil's advocate but another thing I can't help but think is that people are making a lot of money on domains simply because they are in such short supply. With .uk released, scarcity of good names will be reduced and therefore decreasing the profits of domain traders. Are people against it for the right reasons?

You need to go back to the early posts on this thread and read patiently . The arguement has progressed to the point where even the most pro .uk are now against it.

What good is a .uk if you don't have the co.uk? if you try and build a brand on a .uk how much direct traffic do you think will be typing in co.uk? I don't want money bleeding over to someone else.

I wouldn't start a brand on .uk unless I had the co.uk to redirect.

Do you think most businesses will move to .uk from co.uk just to cut out the co? no, that will cost too much changing advertising and you will lose SEO value needlessly.

But will business have to register the .uk? yes to protect their brand.. paying a £20 tax.

Anyway you want to argue for .uk, there's an obvious reason why it wont work and shouldn't be introduced.

Personally, I am against the idea (admittedly I don't quite know all the ins and outs). It seems a good ploy by Nominet to make more money by selling a product that has no advantages over what is already there. Though aren't they a non-profit organisation?

yes

Non profit that makes so much already that they push it into a charitable foundation :)

Instead of spending it on securing .co.uk .org.uk etc, so if it is money issue to secure the network then they are failing in their duties by giving it away.

Of course if it isn't a money issue then why is it going to cost £20'ish for .uk?

They can't have it both ways.... it just doesn't add up.

Maybe we should lobby Nominet to change direction on the amount of charitable donations until they have spent money from the annual surplus and the £3m from short auction (unless they have already spent it) on improving the security of the UK namespace?

I wouldn't lobby anyone yet, as the chances are some of the Directors may not be with Nom much longer... !

This latest criticism is a very tricky one for nominet and the individual charities might also start asking - 'why weren't we informed about this consultation? doesn't our feedback count too?'

Easily circumvented by Nom saying that it's for/about/aimed at businesses, not charities that should be on the .org.uk anyway.

Valid Marketing

I think we should try to keep this thread professional and business like.

Sorry it has been a long fight, yet the idea does have some merit I have suggested to a few businesses as a consultant that a funny uTube video can effectively communicate an important message and if it goes viral can be seen by a huge number of people.

Definition of Numpty :

Someone who (sometimes unwittingly) by speech or action demonstrates a lack of knowledge or misconception of a particular subject or situation
