The new Real Time DAC

You ever tried using that in anger? Patchy at best. Just loves to block you at the slightest whim. It should also be only used to gather full whois details not condensed ones like the DAC.

It's only designed for public facing, not personal use.

Does this means that lists such as Dropsystems will still be available?

I will be closing down my DAC hosting services from the 1st April. I will try out the new system and may introduce something latter in the year.

The caught.co.uk backordering service will continue as per normal though.

I didn't say it wasn't, just that their functions are different. As such its functionality renders the new DAC limits even more restrictive. This is the mail I've just sent to N

I'm writing to ask that the proposed RealTime DAC limits be reviewed prior to the April launch date and an amendment made to the quota limits to read: 'with a minimum daily registrar quota of 100000'. This may be reviewed/adjusted with 250000 or close to.

As a small registrar who provides a service to 3rd parties while not registering domains from them on my TAG this is at best extremely restrictive and at worst renders any service unworkable. The quota I would receive would be under 10000/day. Hardly touching the 2.5million cap! It seems that the quota has been worked out with an extreme bias towards the big 3 registrars without much thought towards smaller registrars providing a niche service.

This essentially provides a monopoly to existing public facing registrars and provides little options for new enterprises. Using the whois2 is NOT an option. It's flaky at best and should be used to provide full whois details, not condensed ones like the DAC.

Great apart from you meant the time delay DAC! The Real Time DAC remains at 432,000 yet has removal of suspended flag etc.

Yes I did... I'm a dork! Already corrected with the big N.

Thanks for being observant! ;)

No worries, I for sure will be sending a similar email. I think the cap should be at least 432,000 like the real time and then their silly formula if that is greater.

This is the second time nominet have tried to put me out of business two years running, bstards.

I think Andrew raised it on Nomsteer weeks ago but got the same old boys network responses.

It seems that those at Nom have no intention of listening to the PAB nor NomSteer, big shame in my opinion.

Remember that the big 3 have huge votes when it comes to electing people onto the board. So the more Nominet please them, the less chance we have of people like Jim Davies appearing on the board and kicking up a fuss.

But their decisions recently just get stranger and stranger.....

is it not because nominet dont like the after sales of .uk domains ? so they will try everything to stamp it out.

Please email the PAB about this

Also I notice that when these changes were first announced the Nominet website said:

"Following the decision by the PAB agreeing to allow
users to have different levels of access to our systems, we are planning to
make some changes to the Domain Availability Checker".

As you can see here:

Google Cache: Domain Availability Checker

However this has now disappeared on the new version:

Domain Availability Checker

Let me remind you what the PAB actually resolved:

The PAB recommends that the Executive develop suitable options to suit the
needs of different segments of the registrar community, but believes that
no registrar should be forced to take a more restrictive option based on
their business model.
http://www.nic.uk/digitalAssets/28809_PAB52minutes_Sept_07.pdf

I will raise it at the next PAB meeting (my last).

Not sure mate, I think it's more personal against the independent players on here. I can't see any other reason for helping the big 3 and punishing the others.

Are you expecting a leaving presentation and gift Andrew - perhaps an engraved vase? Or a tankard?

Going back on topic, does anyone know precisely what the 100ms delay in the time delayed DAC is? By this, I mean does it just delay responses to each query by 100ms, or are the responses instant but the database that it reads from lags 100ms behind the live database? I suppose it's irrelevant in the scheme of things, I am just curious really.

The big beef that I have with the change to the real time DAC is the removal of the suspended flag - is it too late to campaign for change!?

I remember Nominet invited all DAC subscribers to fill out an online survey regarding potential changes to the DAC - I don't recall the results being published anywhere though.

That seems to be more execution / operational rather than policy - so perhaps the policy needs to be more specific, or the stated policy more adhered to?

Depends on the reading of "no registrar should be forced to take a more restrictive option based on their business model"

Would second anyone with issues posting them to [email protected]

Hardly enough capacity to query millions of keywords.

Mining the zone is against nom's terms - and I dont agree with any system that allows that to happen.

I'd hoped to put a public facing service online, but this scuppers it. None of the domains registered through it would be on my TAG but redirected to others e.g 123-reg which this type of quota is extremely biased towards.

Agreed - maths does not reflect the reality of day to day business.

Nom have recognised that the secondary market exists and does not have a problem with it until it interfers with other peoples rights eg. cybersquatting. Where the line is drawn is a different matter :)

Dropcatching is the ultimate first come first served, and various other solutions would no doubt cause greater controversy.

The landscape of dropcatching has always changed, its come a long way from the public whois that updated every 5mins!

It does seem an odd change, I am sure it will be mentioned at the PAB but you have to bear in mind PAB is policy and stuff like that is operational.
