Sedo Auctions

Just submitted two domains to auction:

buyshares .co.uk
studentsinsurance .co.uk

How about a new separate section 'Sedo Auctions' where acorn members can list domains they've sent to auction to get extra interest? Has anyone yet sold any at Sedo auctions? Has it been a success? Will the auction system lead to lower initial offers? i.e. will buyers balk at offering a decent price if they feel it will go to auction anyway. Any thoughts on this?

I also agree that an auction section would be most helpful :-D

Sedo has had many confirmed sales since the auction platform has been implemented.

Over 400 domains have reached their designated reserve price i.e. a sale will result.

The auction is really a great way for potential buyers to realize when great domains are on the market, and also gives the seller a chance to sell at market value.

Well my auction finished a few days ago with no bids (apart from the original offer) and the buyer has yet to pay. Starting to get a little anxious.

When I think about it, I might not have been too pleased if I had bid on a domain (with a good bid) and then found the seller went straight to auction. I haven't checked, but I presume there are no extra safeguards apart from the usual ones to ensure that people pay up following auctions.

So when placing a name for auction are there any restrictions on the level of the reserve price? It seems that if the reserve price is not met there is no obligation to sell. This would seem to be a good way to 'fish' for a max price without being compelled to sell.

I'm assuming one is free to sell even if the reserve isn't met (?)

Yes, there are restrictions. Sedo wouldn't accept the reserve I initially wanted, so I had to compromise. They claimed it "should" lead to a higher ultimate sale price since more buyers will jump in once they know their bids will definitely "win" the auction if they are high bidder - I have my doubts, but 10 days from now I'll know for sure.

As for the second question, I am not sure what the legal position would be if a buyer made a bid lower than the reserve and you tried to accept it anyway... perhaps someone from Sedo could comment?

I'm not surprised to hear that Sedo police reserve pricing; almost like a domain valuation appraisal...but free. I think sellers will be put off listing if told their chosen reserve price threshold is too high.

Hi Everyone,

Sedo will only advise sellers on reserve price for domains which are brokered into auction. For domains which receive a bid and are then taken to auction, the seller can place the reserve of his/her choice.

Our brokers do monitor reserves for brokered auctions because unlike marketplace auctions (which have previously received a bid), if the reserve is not met, the domain name does not sell. If there were lots of domains with million euro price tags on them, no domains would sell, which would be disappointing to both buyers and sellers. As someone already pointed out, having one of our brokers tell you what they think a realistic reserve price would be is almost like receiving a free semi-appraisal. In essence, the broker feels the domain can sell at that price realistically.

Sedo does charge a 10% commission for domains sold through the auction, regardless of whether the auction was brokered or not. The only exception was at the beginning of the auction, when the first domains entered were charged a 3% commission.
