Scotland vote

Been reading some of the comments on the YES Facebook posts. Have to say, some real hatred towards the English on there!

On the .uk front, wouldn't .ruk be more applicable if they get independence?

That works both ways. There is always a small minority of @rseholes on opposite sides of anything. That's life.

I can assure you, 99.9% of the public up here will tell you it has nothing to do with the English, or an anti English feeling. It could not be further from the truth.

You do not have to look far to find the opposite @rsehole side. Take a pop over to the Daily Mail's website.

........................

Scotland is buzzing. I have never seen it so alive. It is a great place to be at the moment. You have people that have never voted in 60yrs now registered to vote.

A great idea to let 16yr olds have a say. The majority are very engaged. Whether it is a yes or a no, there will be some great future politicians born from this youth.

.ruk???

Also:
Take all polls with a large pinch of salt. It could be a large sway to either side.

There is a huge underbelly of people that have never voted ,now registered to vote. They are the unknown. An incredible 97% of people eligible, now registered.

ALL polls (ICM etc) are done online or via phone and are done with previous voters. They have zero representation of the previous non voters.

The decider will be Glasgow.

I have been wondering why security has not been a bigger issue.
The only reason we are a free nation is because we are an Island.
We would no longer be an Island nation, with all the security that that offers.

Fair point! Personally I'm OK if the Scots want to be independent and wish them the best of luck if they get it.

You seem to be forgetting Northern Ireland. Kind of scuppers the 'island nation' argument, they seem to do just fine attached to Eire.

Absolutely. It'll be won in the schemes if there's a Yes vote. That 97% figure is amazing.

The polls are very unlikely to reflect the outcome - most are telephone polls, using pre-selected panelists who have opted-in to take part and have landlines. That excludes a large number of voters in certain demographics, and in areas like Dundee there are significant indicators that yes is far ahead.

As for bookies' odds, you could get 6/1 on Betfair at the end of August for a Yes vote - the odds for elections by this stage are determined largely by the bets placed, not the likely outcome.

Maybe you misunderstood my point.

Parliament, and London as a financial centre are secured by the fact that mainland UK has no borders, we are an Island.
If we have a land border with another country it changes things.

Ah, I see, ta.

Scotland's coast line is now effectively undefended after continuous cutting of naval spending, scrapping of Nimrod without replacement and shutting of bases.

The RAF has no maritime patrol aircraft and the Royal Navy has no conventional ocean-going vessels based in Scotland.

The response to a Russian naval incursion in Scottish waters in December 2013 was to send a RN vessel from Portsmouth - it took 24 hours to arrive on the scene. The Ruskies could have landed and cycled to London by then.

If you're concerned about increased security risks the threat isn't coming from Scottish independence, it's decades of cuts to conventional force budgets while we maintain the stick-on hairy chest that is Trident.

That stick on hairy chest is a deterrent. You're spot on that the Russians could land tomorrow but they know that if they did there's a fookin huge fire cracker coming down the Kremlins chimney pretty soon after.

So in your considered opinion, if we didn't have Trident we would be invaded by Russia? And therefore all non-nuclear armed countries are at threat of invasion? And if they did invade while we have Trident our response would be to nuke them?

That's a level of world view that's impossible to debate with, I'm off to get ready to vote tomorrow, ta ta.

I'm saying that Trident is a lethal deterent, there seems little point having a deterent if you're not prepared to use it?

As for Russia or any other country invading, I'd think it very unlikely but it was only 70 years ago that Germany planned to just that so I suppose never say never.

I can't see what your answer would be to an invasion other than capitulation?

If the Russians invaded Scotland the French would surrender first in sympathy anyway! ;)

Surely the comment that we are a nation island which has not been invaded for centuries and that that adds security for anyone investing in this country speaks for itself, it's hardly arguable.
Having a land border with another country which can choose it's own government dilutes that security which we as a nation enjoy.

Well, all done and dusted, pleased Scotland remain part of the UK. Just wondering though, can we all have the tax back that has funded this glorified survey to see if Scottish people are engaged with politics? Hate to think how much this has all cost.
