Being new here Alien, I'm nervous about what I'm meant to post in different places, and getting into trouble with the mods on my first day!!! But I've listed them all on my profile under 'about me'... thanks for your interest and earlier comments

You have some great names there, they will easily get you through your degree, with no part-time work in my opinion - manage them well & you're sorted. :) Leaving you more time to concentrate on your harvard referencing, lol.

Interesting you have vaughanwilliams.com as I have the .co.uk (love this composer!).

I own 50 domains and some other good names like this. Do you think I could seriously raise £100 or £200 a month with these domains?

Easily! If they're all like poetry.co.uk, then that's £100-200 per month, PER domain!

I'll be honest - if I could get £6 or 7000 it would make such a difference to my workload at uni.

Of course, it depends a lot on what your other domains are but, if you had 10 other domain as good as poetry.co.uk, £6-7,000 per year wouldn't be at all unrealistic, year in year out. It may even be significantly more. It all depends on the domains and whether you pull out all the stops to get something up online as soon as possible.

I personally wouldn't sell until investigating this avenue - the value of the domain is not going to go down, a £5k buyer is never going to be all that tough to find. A 15k buyer may, of course, take quite a bit more time to source.

Just like a rental property, you could reap the rewards this domain has to offer and still retain it and its value as an asset / investment for any situations in the future...situations where you may urgently need the lump sum even more.

The sort of sums of money you're mentioning just stagger me. I don't even know where to begin (but I will start my research). I've been sitting on some of my domains for 10 years. I feel so cross with myself that I might have earnt money from them all this time.

I won't get OTT yet, because in reality it may not work out as simple. But basically if I could raise £300 to £400 a month (which I'm not getting carried away and assuming yet) it would free me up to study instead of working endless weekends and night duties. It would be awesome.

So... Adsense someone mentioned... is that the first place to research. I can stick stuff up on websites if that helps, I'm fine with Dreamweaver.

This all sort of amazes me.

Hi Susannah,

£300 to £400 is very achievable if you develop some of your domain names in to functioning websites with adsense on. But obviously this will take lots of hard work by yourself before this happens, it wont happen overnight.

If you're happy with Dreamweaver - why not research all the top search terms G Keyword search and say the top 10 - 15 poets and get some content written (there's a couple of people on this forum that can get copy written for £6 - £10 for 450 words).

You can then put your site 'live' with 20 odd pages, put in Adsense and also an Amazon 'contextual' ad widget and I reckon you will do £400 a month after just a couple of months...no problems. You can then add pages whenever you feel like it concentrating on say the John Heggley's or the classics and people will start to bookmark the site.

All you need do is spend a few evenings and spend say £200 on copy to free you up to get started.

You could also sell a few of your lesser domains on Acorn to concentrate on the biggies... there's a few people here that may buy the Geo ones you have.

Selling to a publisher could also be a big 'instant' win. I have a friend that knows the MD of Bloomsbury is that's any help... I could put you in touch.

Good luck... oh and also put a holding page on prayer.co.uk too!!

You might make a bundle
But you'll likely do worse
There's no need to grumble
There's no money in verse

Susannah - try not to be in a hurry to sell poetry.co.uk. If I owned it I certainly wouldn't take £15k for it. Do you know anything about the mob poetry scams in the 80's? That's a publishing model you could adopt if you did it ethically. You have the exact domain for it. Kudos to you and I wish you luck in all you do.

Hi its a great name but how would you make any money from it, I cannot see it making any revenue or just very little, but just a resource site for poets?

If it was a product domain, or a domain that described a business service then you could certainly do something with it.

Thats prob the reason why the last seller sold it ;) and there is still a holding page after 15 years.. ;)

I would value it around £3,000 - £5,000 with todays current climate.

Amazon.co.uk has 266,510 books/ebooks classified under the "Poetry" subcategory. That shows that there's a massive market for published poetry. It should be possible to script an Amazon affiliate-based site that pulls only from the Poetry section, i.e. that specialises in poetry. I would have thought that would be a good way to make ongoing revenue from a site.

Again, to show the size of the "niche" the Poetry Library carries 100,000 items on its shelves http://www.poetrylibrary.org.uk/about/

If you consider that the term "poetry" itself has over 18,000 exact local searches a month and that there are probably going to be thousands of individual poems that each get several thousand searches, the "long tail" of the poetry niche will no doubt encompass millions of search phrases.

I think there is only me and Shaun who see that most visitors to the site will be happy to get their poetry for free off the site or other sites, if you got all 18k UK exacts as 1 UV each to your site, a click through rate of 3k even which then converts to 5% CR = 150 sales per month, average book of £4 at 5% commission = 150 x 20p = £30 per month or £360 per year.

Other people give their views on the maths please but I bet if anything my calculations are to high ?

You're overlooking the fact that most people searching for poetry are unlikely to start searching using the term "poetry" but the specific name of the poet or the poem they're interested in. If it's a famous or well-known work, they might well even be searching using a line from the poem not just the title.

For example, the rime of the ancient mariner gets almost 15,000 searches a month across various closely related search phrases, and that's just ONE poem by ONE poet (albeit a famous one).

Public domain content (from material old enough to be out of copyright) could be used to back-fill the site so as to add thousands of pages of content that people are actually searching for every single day.

Did you read the post above where Mally said he would pay £5k today for it?

Anyone who is valuing this name at sub £10k reseller needs to learn more about domain values IMO

Fabulous domain name, great potential, endless content which could be written for it, loads of ways to monetise and a potential 'sticky' site also

Good luck with the sale, and just by Mally offering £5k for a quick sale should give you confidence at how valuable this name is, and the potential is has :)

Bensd..Yes and I think he would regret the buy later on...

Edwin..
How tacky does a website look with lots of amazon links all over, people arnt stupid they know the website makes money from affilate links when they start at one site and end up at amazon :D

I think its one of those names that look great in your portfolio but to actually make money is something else..

Frank everyone knows you charge like a wouned rhino ;)
