Just about had it with WP now, virtually no way to edit sites in the control panel, can't change the images on the page of the theme, feck all, load of shit, wasted a whole night without sleep and wasted my money on this shite WP, load of b*llox

The images will be In the images folder. Check it via your ftp client and simply place a new one in its place.

Wow you guys were up late. As for editing things I find it easier to get things done by editing the theme fies localy then uploading via FTP.
I should be around most of the day mate feel free to drop us a PM if you get stuck trying to get anything done.

A lot of nice looking themes on that site, but after downloading 8 zip files and installing them, all have various errors on them and parts that don't work, such as images sliders, or the menu doesn't show etc

Got one on the narrowboats site at the moment, but it's very plain looking and the featured video thing doesn't work on this theme. Been through loads of free WP sites in the last 2 days and viewed several thousand templates, none of which I like, but any I did like didn't work due to various errors in them again, it's really disheartening , so if anyone knows of a nice free WP theme that actually works when installed, please post a link to it, cheers.

They do work but you have to create the entries so that the sliders appear and you have to create the menus, so that they appear too.

Lee, yes, I created entries and I had created a working menu, it was working perfectly on a couple of themes, but the slider images and menus wouldn't display on some of the other themes I tried.

Anyway, just made a bit of a balls up, bought a template theme, which gives you 2 zip files to download, so I downloaded 1 and uploaded it, except at the bottom of the installation instructions, it says to upload the other one first before uploading the one I uploaded, now why the hell don't they tell you that next to the bloody download link?

End result was I was getting some sql error on the domain, couldn't login to WP either as same error showing, so had to login to HostGator and uninstall WP all together, and everything else I had installed, ffs, so back to square one again, but at least I now have a theme that will hopefully work, currently in the theme setting section but not sure of a lot of what it's asking me to set on this one, more complicated than the setting in the other themes I uploaded, but onwards and upward.

Well I'm calling it a day now, what a complete waste of time buying a theme and hosting and pissing about trying to get it work for what is now the 3rd friggin day

I though WP was going to be a simple case of, write something in a box, add an image if you want, and hit the submit button, nothing could be further from the truth.

In order to make a post, there are literally dozens of clicks and things that have to me done, including setting up widgets and all the attributes within them for the top right, top left, featured bottom, secondary sidebar, sidebar bottom left, sidebar bottom etc etc, and still, after doing that, you make a new post, and that goes on the home page, but it then takes you to somewhere else on the site to read it that is nothing to do with what you just posted about, and not the place you want to read, completely fkin uselss system, load of old wank, simple html on notepad wins by a mile, write what you want, click file >> save >> done, piece of piss compared to friggin WP:mad::mad::mad:

@ mods, feel free to lock this and throw away the key.

lol dont worry systreg i feel your pain, been there done it and have long forgot about wp ;-)

You really should stick with it a bit longer think a lot are your troubles are down to the fact that you've jumped right in with a more complex premium theme which are good for some but for someone who likes a more custom feel are not always the best option.

Theres a few bare bones themes I could dig out for you if you want. They let you apply your own structure/style.

As for your homepage stuff its probably just a case of changing a php call to display more content.
Also sometimes just hard-coding want to appear only on the homepage is an easier option.

If your really done with it you may be able to get your hosting fees back some hosts give you a week or so if you cant.

Send me your original narrow-boat HTML and I'll port a few template pages over to a simple theme and comment it to give you an idea whats happening were

I honestly can't be bothered with it any longer, deleted it today as something wasn't working properly, which was the [read more] link on home page posts that wouldn't display, spent hours messing about with it today, even uploaded and reinstalled it again, same thing happening, so uninstalled WP completely and started again, except I forgot to upload the mainframe bit first so had to delete and start yet again , but still had the same [read more] link missing.

Anyway, finally found out how to get it to show [read more] links in posts, but with the amount of time I've already wasted doing multiple things to change and set up just to make a bloody post, I could have made a html site by using my Perth html template, so now deleted WP completely and wont be using it again, what a fecking nightmare WP is to use, never ever again, thanks for all the help and advice, but it's totally wasted on me, if it's techy like WP, it does my head in and I go off the rails, luckily nothing smashed/broken at home this time.

Narrowboats site is now back online in simple html stylie mode :) What a difference html is and so simple to use!

Just need to bung some content on there now, as it has been partially indexed whilst messing about on that WP rubbish.

I've had similar fun and games with customising Wordpress.

One further bad thing to watch out for is themes which crash terminally when you try to amend the theme developer's links.

If you're building a decent sized site and you're happy for every page to link to 3 off-topic sites then...fair enough.

I've reached the conclusion that your own HTML design with a blank wordpress loop inside it (ie no themes from someone else) to manage some of the content is an OK way to develop a medium sized site.
