Just make a backup of your files before you do anything zip up the folder there in and then have a play it will save you endless amounts of time and if something goes wrong unzip your originals and every things back the way it was.
In terms of hosting I went with evohosting after reading some good comments on here.
So far I've only a few small sites there but I'm more than happy with them connection seems really fast compared to my godaddy hosting.
They also have simple installs for wordpress and the like.

also in terms of adding to your site perth.org.uk/forum for example basicly you just set up a folder called forum then intall your chosen forum script into it very easy to do on most hosting plans I've ever used

@ Newpbc, thanks for the advice re hosting and having to set up a folder for installing the forum, handy to know, but I'll probably need some guidance when it comes to me doing that :) Just need to decide what hosting company I go with.

I looked at Evohosting before, but then saw somone having a right load of hassle with them, so that put me off at the time, had a PM saying Krystal are cheap and the support isn't brilliant, said they've had had a few problems with them but that they seem to be getting better, basically, you get what you pay for.

Just need something simple really where I can host unlimited domains and has that one click installer, just wondering, with the Fantastico WP, can you fully customise the WP site so that it doesn't look like a standard blog site, or can you only do that if you download WP and install it yourself rather than using Fantastico to install it?

The main reason i went with evo over Krystal was unlimited MySQL databases which is better for multiple wordpress sites.
I've never used fantistico so I couldn't say for sure but being wordpress I would imagine so. As the appearance of wordpress sites is all controlled by separated template files. if you know a little HTML and css you make your site look pretty much how you like

Kev, if its any help I went with a reseller account with clook having done quite a lot of looking around. Its £25 and that gives unlimited domains and has one click installer (thats pretty standard these day). Never had a problem with them and support has been excellent. I would def recommend

Re wordpress, you change the look by uploading themes into your content file after installation (the default look is just a particular theme), so it doesn't matter if its been installed via fantastico (the one click software) or manually.

I've used www.hostgator.com for years, never had any problems.

You can host as many sites as you like for $9.99 per month. Support is fantastic, immediate via the live chat, and you have fantastico etc all there.

If you search your fav search engine for "hostgator coupon" you will find a code to get the first month for $0.01

I highly recommend hostgator. They also have a very generous affiliate program, but I've not included any affiliate links here.. The servers are in the US, but I've seen no adverse affects for UK names hosted in the US.

I've also used a UK host which was fantastic, but I no longer required it, used them for a dedicated sql server. http://www.pcsmarthosting.com/ I can recommend them if you really need UK based servers.

I went back to the Krystal site earlier onto have another look and their site was down for a while, so that doesn't inspire confidence in them.

Will have a look at Hostgator as suggested by FagEnd and Springer.

Another thing I just though of, might cause me a problem, say I used Fantastico to make a WP site, but I want to keep the current Perth site online until I made a WP one, how would I be able to make the site if I have a site on it currently, can you do something like make the WP site on a spare domain, and then once the site is fully working, change it over to the Perth domain name?

Site, WP and Hosting

I like the site, but WP would make it a lot easier to manage, my dev guys now use it a lot more with some custom elements so I had to learn it (told them it was so I would no longer need them, they work a lot harder now...lol), but I bought quite a few ebooks etc, fould some of them really good, if you want I will dig them out over the weekend and send them over, I found it quite hard until I read up on it.

For hosting I have 3 reseller/vps accounts but started using JustHost reseller on the higher traffic sites that use my custom scripts in WP, and so far they have been really good, and you can get 20% of with a little clicking back after going to the checkout (twice).

Let me know and I will look out the books I used.

Leon

Ok then, just signed up for HostGator hosting, now the fun and games begins :)

No idea how to get the Perth site on there as I already have a site on it, so I've stuck www.narrowboats.org.uk on there for now to have a play around with the WP, just installed it using Fantastico, site looks bloody rubbish now as it is, probably look the same when I finish playing around with it lol

I bloody hate WP. Can get used to it at all. Joomla for me is a lot easier, whilst at the same time a lot more powerful.

Systreg, try uploading a new theme and making it active to see how its done.

Lee, I'm pulling my hair out already mate, the theme choices in the WP panel are crap, so having to look round for a theme to download and add, but can't find anything, also looking at plugins now, so I can add a classified section, but not sure they automatically install or not, getting wound up now, I knew html is the way to go for me, it's all I know, WP looks crap , I want something that looks like a website, not a bloody blog, I hate blogs, never liked the look of them.

Ans some dozy American bith just phoned from HostGator to confirm who I am, phone woke my Mrs upm fkin divs grrrrrrrrr

Cheers Lee, yeah, a few nice looking ones there, I quite like the look of this one: http://www.jinsonathemes.com/demo/?themedemo=chronicle

Have downloaded it but it's a rar file, and in the WP control panel is says to upload your zip file, what now, or is it the rar same thing as a zip by a different name?

When I downloaded it, they came out as ZIP, however a rar should be the same, try to upload it, see what it says.

Ok tried and got an error, it says:

Unpacking the package…

Incompatible Archive. PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature

I cannot even browse to the URL you gave me for where the theme is. (IE8) - Try one of the others on the link I gave you, they worked for me.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the photo of that boat off the home page, needs to be a narrowboat photo on it instead, but can't see anywhere to change it.
