New Auction Platform

Looking in to AngularJS at the moment. Wouldn't it be great to have a modern auction platform built with something like Angular!

You're thinking far too technically minded my young friend, there is no denying that somebody on Acorn is capable of building awesome software, the question that must now be answered is there actually a need for it? =)

The problem is you could spend £100k+ and 6 months getting ready to launch. Yet Sedo are always only ever some personnel changes and rule/fee updates away from wiping you out, which they could implement in a day if they wanted. What happens if you spend 95% of the time/money then Sedo make changes that make your idea completely obsolete?

Or Denys hires a web designer...

I'm always surprised how quickly you can burn through money with this developing lark! Not something for the faint hearted, that's for sure!

Is there space for a new domain auction platform focusing mainly on the UK market ?

Currently the uk domain market has two options. Sedo and DomainLore.
Nope. Straight and to the point.
I saved you 15 pages of reading :p

Sedo have too many shortcomings to list, and don't seem to be interested in the UK market.
As suggested earlier by our beloved Invincible, I think it would be good to outline all those shortcomings in your business plan, since Sedo and DL would be your main competitors. Sedo have been around for many years and have lots of staff and resources compared to the other domain outfits. While some of their actions may seem inept, they are not newbies to the game. I have seen many attempts to challenge their leadership, but eventually the sites die out or become another shabby, unprofitable domainer to domainer marketplace (eg. Bido).

I don't think the market for domain names is big enough and liquid enough. Even when you are not focused on the UK market solely. But you need to do research, not just ask for our sentiment, that is certainly subjective.
This is what I would want to know: how big is the pie ? What do I have, that my competitors lack ?

Step 1: Tally all the reported sales from your 'competitors' and you'll see how much they are making on .uk domains. This should at least give you a rough idea. Then, assume that you will be making significantly less than your competitors.
Step 2: Put the figures in your balance sheet vs the costs to get started.
Step 3: Sit back. By now, it should be obvious that many trades outside domaining are possibly less difficult and more rewarding.

Good luck :p

Would certainly like to see a well designed auction site that instils trust in the buyer. I like to think I'm pro-active when auctioning off a domain and make an effort to contact any businesses relevant explaining the domain, my ownership, and a link to the auction. It would be great if the buyer follows the link and has the confidence to then bid.

There would be a good profit for the owner of the auction site once its set up and running successfully enough to warrant having a bash at it, it was the Wright brothers, Father who told them they would never fly like a bird..

maybe DL is just what it is - an auction house for domain traders - which it is great for - just not so great for achieving the best prices from end-users

If you've gone to the effort of contacting and getting a few end-users interested - you want the auction process to do your work justice. I'm starting to think the best way to go about achieving a top price is to run private auctions, by invite only, where everyone is visible (by an email-address at least) to each other and everyone has the right to request any bids be kept strictly confidential by all involved, maybe a small 'tick box contract' when entering. The 'reserve' will be made puclic to all invited on the auction page before hand - they then have the option to place a PRIVATE bid of their choice (but partial hidden details are shown i.e. £XXX - a***h@H***.com), when the time has lapsed to enter a private bid, all bids are revealed to those who placed a bid

if all bids are below reserve the seller has the right to accept/refuse top bid -

if, when revealed, any that are over the 'reserve' will get a chance to bid once and only once more privately (but £XXX or £XXXX will again show next to name and email a****h@H***.com) - obviously if only one is higher than reserve they win then.

Any one else who knows about the auction i.e. from a post on here perhaps - can invite themselves to the auction and will also be told the reserve then - if they agree they accept to pay the reserve if there are no other bids.

I'd like to see an auction site with the capabilities to set up one of the above - would even pay a set fee for setting up each auction - (£20-£50 maybe) - as I sure don't have the skills to make it myself.

shitting hell, apologies for rambling, I'm sure there's a good idea in there somewhere though... :)

Someone said earlier in the thread, atleast when the auction finishes it will reveal who you was actualy bidding against - human nature to think some auto-bot is racking the price up on a £50 domain.

If someone is serious about developing something i have a few quid and am willing to invest.

Cheers,
Lee Hart

I think the bit where Sedo trumps DL is the parking aspect.

IF, and this is a MASSIVE IF, you were able to populate a listing like Sedo, with quality controlled names, which can be pushed to auction, then you maybe on to something.

Sedo has the names sat there, gathering dust. DL they need to added, and have a limited timeframe. If a catalogue of auctionable names was kept, which someone can kick into auction with a "opening bid", we maybe have a footing.

Just my view :)

Yeah I just read through it all again, and it shouldnt of really ended up like this but I am glad finally meet you and see who you are, I am 100% going to put the effort into attending one of these meets...

Sean, don't bother mate, think big bang theory, Sheldon and you will know what you are up against. Us Northerners shouldn't bother with things like that.

Heh. Don't put yourselves down. I have northern connections but I wasn't brought up there. Pointless creating stupid barriers despite the fact that you might have just come in off the drink. ;)

(from iPhone)

No drink here my friend, just letting a friend know that there is no point bothering with people like you. Was a friendly comment :)

I agree I do think this is one of the drawbacks of DL, room for improvement in this area is definitely possible, a more trustworthy looking site would mean more end user's buying and could also encourage seller's to be more active in finding end user's. Some of these end users may even buy more than one domain over time . Maybe someone could team up with the owner of DL.

A .com auction site similar to Domainlore could be an idea.

Cheers Leeroy, I already know I wont fit in. They prob wouldnt even let me in the door! (I prob couldnt even afford the entrance fee :D )

Just a question about these events?

1: Do you have to pay to get in?

2: Are the speakers being paid to talk?

3: What exactly happens at these events, I always picture old millionaires dicussing speed boats, business class flights, champange and caviar?

haha, dreamers and chancers more like (and maybe old), certainly not millionaires.

Us Northerners shouldn't bother with things like that.

There's Northerners, there's Southerners, and then there's invincible :D

On topic, the lack of domains on DL at the moment may suggest no need to pursue another auction site, or that sellers are aren't bothering (or selling at the minute).

Everyone is invited (though at the moment I have 35 confirmed).

Even Ian can come if he puts his shoes on and tucks his shirt in :p

To answer your questions:

1. You don't have to pay to get in and we have a bar tab
2. There are no speakers and it is informal - people talking in a hotel bar
3. Wizard gets drunk, Invincible sips cocktails, I watch the bar tab

I'm also a northerner and the millionaires are old school :)

Sean,

We will turn up next door and have a good drink :).

Cheers,
