New Auction Platform

Sunshine are very well clued up as far as domains, affil marketing and so on goes on so I expect they're not a brilliant example of a real business doing something here. It wouldn't have seemed daunting to them to use it, and they could have easily researched it.

I think if I was trying to get a deal with a big end user done (i.e. one that had to be signed off by various people or departments) I'd have far more confidence telling them "Sedo, the major multinational company" were going to be assisting, than "Denys, the shed guy".

I appreciate none of the above matters when you're talking £50 domain sales between domainers though.

I don't really care who wins in the end as long as its not Sedo. I hate them with a passion but I've often been forced to deal through them just because they're the immediate first choice for everyone else.

I have not read the whole thread as some of it was handbag's at dawn. But i think in particular DL could definatly be more end user friendly if this wasn't already mentioned. I remember when the 1 mil milestone was reached, additional information was added. I think an about/info page explaining what DL is all about would be a big improvement as well as improving the UI.

I might be reading you wrong but you seem to be saying that the very opposite of what makes Sedo so difficult to deal with i.e. size and complexity is what makes DomainLore seem amateurish and untrustworthy?

I don't think size and complexity makes Sedo difficult to deal with. There are plenty bigger and far more profitable companies which are easier to work with.

Sedo hiring idiots and then refusing to listen to very valid customer feedback over and over is what makes them a nightmare to deal with.

Domainlore seems amateurish and untrustworthy as it has all the hallmarks of being run by a teenager in his bedroom. poor domain name, poor design, poor management skills (do you see Sedo posting a blog post like one of Denys rants about specific shill bidders? I don't), no corporate info, no address, no phone number, just all round no perception of credibility. It can never grow past domainers buying and selling absolute crap between themselves, unless that is sorted. I know someone will go pick out a specific sale like Sunshine or whatever... and sure they'll be some. But in general what I'm saying will continue to be the case.

Sedo need to get rid of Dildo and that other clown who posts on Acorn. They're doing a woeful job... they should have been fired months ago after all this .uk farce.

I can't knock domainlore for what it is & I'm very thankful to Denys for running it personally.

The following is a snippet from an e-mail I received from an end user who bought a domain from me via DomainLore recently ...

"While perfectly legal and not uncommon, I find the actions of domainlore extremely unethical, with those complicit in the sales of 'freshly caught' domains unlikely to be the type of person I'll place blind trust in. Especially considering the number of domain name scams out there and the perilous nature of internet transactions."

I think his reply says a lot about the publics perception of the domain aftermarket and it will take much more than a redesign and telephone number to change that.

Sure but some people just aren't going to trust you regardless. Sedo is stuffed full of trademark domains so they have their own issues if people go looking. Its just on Domainlore the more scummier aspects of domaining are presented front and centre, so its harder to avoid it.

A big +1, DL has been a great service, as with most thing's, room for improvement is possible. When you take a look at some of Deny's sale's i'm sure he could do without the hassle of DL at times.

Which pretty much takes us back to post #1 and why this thread was actually started in the first place :)

This has been talked about many times in the past a few people have attempted this but without a large database of users this wouldn't work. Just look at DL that's taken years to get where it is today.

I agree, thats what i thought when i saw it, there are 4-5 members on here all currently building auction sites thats not even mentioning the ones that have failed over the last 4-5 years..

Some better discussions going on now....

One thing I will say is who has the capabilities and money and infostructure to really see of the competition it would need a huge effort putting into it.

Is it me or has Sedo started to tidy up thier homepage? looking less clutered ...

I think they could be reading this thread looking to better themselves...

Shame my thread in early 2013 didn't get this much loving maybe we'd have something awesome by now.. :)

The fact is there are numerous people here more than capable of actually programming and building the platform, but marketing and such is a whole different matter and would require a big investment to raise enough awareness to knock Sedo off their perch..

Nail on the head. It's one thing building a really good platform, it's another thing getting people (especially domainers) to use it.

"Build it and they'll come". Pffft.

The problem is, its just not the coding thats the issue, its the branding the marketing, the quality of names to entice buyers to the new auction platform, then a good constant quality of names bringing buyers back which denys has got as hes got 4-5 members all catching with him supplying the site with quality.

Lets be fair, anyone better at catching then Denys? Can anyone keep the supply of "creme" like Denys can.

I am sorry but I feel the game is already over...

Perhaps just something simple, a fantastic professional looking site where all domains are absolutely fixed price. Simple, straightforward. Would that be better?

With fixed price there is no real rush to go out and buy the domain?

There wouldn't be any rush if it was your typical Acorn domain stock at normal prices no.

If things were actually priced to sell then the rush would be the worry someone else buys before you and you lose out.

Sorry, I am sounding negative.. I am all up for it, :)

Looking in to AngularJS at the moment. Wouldn't it be great to have a modern auction platform built with something like Angular!
