if there is a delay in the automaton then yes we have a chance, if nominet services are running smoothly then yep the wind will be wet

There is indeed a great day coming up. But there have been a few days where several good names have come up and dropped with > 12 hours between them. Yet the same tag managed to snag both.

I could see them grabbing one, by pushing all their effort during one part of the day. But both?

Guys - you know who you are - if this EPP stuffs up your reign of glory, will you promise to tell us how you did it? Even if it makes grown men cry?

Looks like I've still got a way to go with my lists then, didn't pick that one up. To be fair to you I won't add it to my checks for the day, I'll just go for the LLL's and the dictionary words.

how can names drop randomly when all the good, good stuff goes to 2 tags?

some with everything, if u have the money, u get the luck

I actually don't doubt that the system is reasonably fair, as far as Nominet's coding goes. Despite their previous track record.

As far as we know, those 2 tags have found a cunning way to do things faster. We're all just bitter as we've not found it.

Those same two tags seem to be noticable by their absence in the drops since this thread started, no doubt they will be back soon enough.

Well I'm still totally foxed. The timings on LLL.co.uk catches by the usual suspects don't look any different for any others.
Everybody going for a large batch of names on the same day, will be an interesting test.

My best guess so far, would be that there is nothing wrong with the drops, but there is a loophole in the system that Nominet don't seem to want to close.

If it's what I think it is, then it's not even a loophole. It's just that no-one else has coded their tools to take full advantage of everything on offer.

It would be like only thinking there were two lanes on a motorway and complaining that people kept getting to their destination ahead of you, when they were just making use of the outside lane.

Nice analogy.
I think I would complain if the outside lane was for busses only, people kept shooting past on it and the police just said that they couldn't be arsed to do anything about it.

I don't understand what you mean by "pre-loading"?

You can go faster than 200ms. 200ms would be the minimum if you spread your full quota over a single day. You can go as fast as 65ms in bursts.

I'm betting those guys have managed to get multiple tags. If they had 10 or 20 tags each, then they'd be able to hit the DAC at insane speeds.

Or, if they pooled together with exactly the same setup & names, and phase sync'd via a common atomic clock signal or similar, they could hit the DAC twice as fast as the rest of you at say 33ms in bursts, or 100ms based on a full quota.

Also, how random are the drops within each second? If Nominet's system is able to drop so randomly, there must be something to determine this.
