Making a Domain earn £1 a week

Great post guys, thanks so much for your help and advice.

Once we've built a mini site, what next?

1) Where do you submit it?
2) How many places do you submit to?
3) Do you update your minisite (if so how often)

thanks

Mally

1) I dont submit mine anywhere - expect perhaps as an entry in my signature on here
2) See above
3) A couple of my sites I have not updated for the past 9 months. They continue to see an increase in traffic, so Im inclined to leave them alone.

Rule #1: Don't submit to any search engines and don't worry about meta tags

You must put something in the title tag tho, which is not classed as a meta tag by the way, make it short & include the words that are in your domain name.

Get some links from some other sites, related to your site if possible. Link exchanges can help a little but for me I rank these at about 1/10th the power of oneway links.

Once the search engines follow these links to your site, your site will be included in their results. Search engines don't like you to submit your site they would rather find you via links, so spend your time on this not submitting to search engines.

As for updating, I have several sites that I have not touched for years and they still bring in decent money every month, however, if you want to increase your earnings the best way is to add content, the more pages you add the more you will make, but then you no longer have a mini site.:)

Well done with these. Just wondering if you designed the template or whether it was from the one of the template sites? Also where did you source the pictures?

Cheers

Stephen.

The template came from below. I just butchered it a bit.

Pictures:
I have collected pictures since owning my first computer way back in 1999. So I have quite a few. Are they all royalty free? most likely not.

Just wanted to say thanks very much - this is a great discussion :D .

I think like a few people reading this I have been inspired to have a go at creating my own minisite...and here it is www.howtoinstalldrupal5.co.uk.

I've just put it live, so it'll be interesting to see how it does over the next couple of weeks. Anyway, thanks again.

EDIT: Here's another I've tried - www.iphone-trader.net. Gone for a different angle this time with comedy pictures.

I've got a few questions....

Hi All,
It's my first post :)
Great thread, ....thanks.
I've got a few questions....

How to find a hosting provider ?
With my current host there is a 1 domain limit, should I go for
1.hostgator
2.or any other you would recommend for someone in the UK?, as there are consequences for changing the provider later on !

Which topic ?
I am fairly familiar with computer Networking, Cisco, Network security etc...
Is it a good idea to go write articles based on these topics ?
How do I find whether there's a demand for the above topics ?
1.Google trends ?
2.Search google and anything which has less than 1 million entries ?
3.Should I check the available ads for the above Google search as well ? For e.g. If there are no ads for a given topic then there won't be any adsense for it ?

Thank you very much.

If you're wanting to rank well for UK audience, then the generally accepted recommendation is to host the site on a UK IP address.

If you have a lot of sites, then I'd suggest a reseller account as you'll be able to have total seperation between sites giving each one it's own account making it easier to move sites between hosts should you want to sell it on later.

Alternatively if you are happy with your current provider, then why not ask them to remove the 1 domain limit, with most hosting control panels it's only a minute or 2's work to make the change.

If you're wanting to rank well for UK audience, then the generally accepted recommendation is to host the site on a UK IP address.

But if using country specific TLD's ie. .co.uk, .org.uk etc, hosting location can be anywhere in the world.

I host most of my sites in the US and they are .co.uks. I can recommend a host in the US where you can setup sites for $12 each pa which is circa £6 and he's contactable most of the time on msn messenger. You may be better off doing that for your first couple of sites until your upto speed and know what your doing.

pm if you want the contact.

p.s. I'm not on commission!

adsense, ads are not relevant to the content

Hi All,
Thanks for the earlier advice.
Having a problem with adsense, ads are not relevant to the content, what can I do ?
Would it be appropriate to ask anyone who has the time to have a look at the site I've created and give any feedback.

Thanks.

You dont have a sig yet. If the ads have just been applied then it may take a few hours, make sure you have clear title/description tags, H1 & H2 and try and get some relative back links.

finding good ideas for a tool based mini site

Cheers Scot, nice article. the site it at Life in the UK test
I've used wordpress with an SEO and adsense plugin. Do you think I should go for a pure html based site..?

Cheers Scot,
I am pretty new to this :). Didn't realise that there was duplicate content. Changed the page to basic html. Wonder why my signature is not working ..hmmm

No problem Att,
Signatures will only appear if your post is 10 words or more and you have more than 25 posts since joining the forum

Cheers Scot,
Just a quick query about adsense, ...you might have come across this...
when I use www.lifeuk.info ads appear fine, but when http://lifeuk.info is used (without using www) ads do not appear.
Is there a way I can fix this ?
