iphone - any good?

I've been using macs and PCs day in day out for last 10 years... Sure I'm biased. But give me a choice of a mac and PC for design work and I know what I'd choose every day... and it's not just because it looks good!

Azooza,

Dont get so defensive, as stated "IMO". Sure I've used BSD, very good product, although I still prefer Linux.

My logic is based on ownership of said products. If you think Apple's success in entirely based on the quality of their products and is not largely due to aesthetic appeal, IMO you are mistaken.

anyone know whether the browser can access Google docs?
That's one of the bugbears with safari on Apple

It's crap that a business can't get an iPhone contract with O2, so expensing and reclaiming VAT is not possible.

God what a depressing thread this is. Where would you all be if you weren't open to new ideas in the domain space?

Personally I got one earlier this week (no I didn't queue and take part in the hype) and it's fantastic. It's also cheaper than running an O2 XDA Exec (for data) and a SE810i (for phone). OK, the camera might not be as good, but the phone is not my main camera anyway. And as for MMS, I've never used that, so no loss there. Easier to take a phot and then email to someone or even direct to my blogger page.

I've also starting looking at the development issues to ensure that sites I build work properly with the iPhone. It's very good at rendering standard webpages, but a full sized parked page is scaled down making it harder for people to click on the ads that keep you all in beer.

With a quick browser/OS check the parked page can be smaller, to ensure that it fills the iPhone screen at a readable/clickable size, hopefully resulting in better CTR. And the way the browser works, people WILL start accessing the Internet more when mobile. The WiFi features work with "The Cloud" access points (for free) and don't forget that McDonalds will have free WiFi in all branches by the end of the year.

Also this £900 thing is being bandied around - load of crap! They are adding the cost of the handset to the 18 monthly rental payments. That's just stupid. Everyone spends SOMETHING every month, and many people spend a lot more than £35 a month. So to include that in the cost is just irrelevant.

Steve, you're on the button. Despite not being able to get it 'on expenses', I nevertheless caved in and picked one up.

I have had four 'smartphones' over the last couple of years, and this has really blown me away. It may miss some features here and there but overall it is a really useful piece of kit. 90% of my phone time is for business purposes, and just putting aside the aesthetics for a second, it is already the most productive pda/phone/whatever I have ever used.. light years ahead imo. Within minutes I set up my googlemail imap account.

At home and work the wi-fi is blistering, and using edge / safari round london still beats the speed of any other mobile browser ever. And yes can log straight in to Google Docs.

After having a fiddle in the apple shop and nicking James' for a few mins I must say I love the device - and my main concern would be the lack of swappable sim for going abroad.

Love the web browser... !

Might wait until the SDK is out in the new year and hopefully a V2 some point around then and slum it with the N95 8gb until then :)

And everyone needs to remember that the expensing thing is kind of different if the product is related to your line of business. As a Web Developer and related Technology Etc. I need to keep on top of changing technologies in order to generate more business. That is all claimable. Just like DJs being able to buy records and CDs as abusiness expense; models claiming for makeup and stuff.

Sure if you are an accountant or a shop assistant, then I guess you would find it difficult to justify claiming, but when it directly affects your work, that's a different matter.

What is SDK?

I wonder if not having 3G/ HSDPA was a cynical marketing decision. I assume V2 will have it this time next year. I can hear Mr. Jobs saying, " yes, we've listened to our loyal customers and here it is" - vomit.

I've spent some time trying out the phone and I'm not sure I really like the touch screen way of things that much.

I've no doubt they know that they will be able to sell another batch once 3G is in the handset. Way of the world though, much like upgrading TVs, video cards, cars etc.
