DNJournal.com have just reported the highest ever value hyphenated domain sale. Hotel-Reservation.com sold thro' Sedo for $209,916

They obviously wanted it more than you would have done. That's how prices are established.

If you look at another example: holiday-rentals.co.uk (& that is the domain they host their site on), they also own holidayrentals.co.uk & holiday-rentals.com

I guess it works for them?

Why not be critical of something? Its a forum, for discussion. I think the price was a poor one, so I commented on it. I don't see the problem there.

Clearly they know more about hotel reservations than me, but I would suggest any business model that will succeed with the domain hotel-reservations.com would have succeeded with a different, better, cheaper domain also.

Perhaps it is the same company - in that case it was a bad move to wait till their non hyphenated site was successful before they tried to buy the hyphen, and got held to ransom.

I own a bunch of hyphen domains, but only to protect against this type of thing. None of my real sites have hyphens in them. I wouldn't build a real business around a domain unless I owned all the versions of it that would be likely to be used against me in the future.
