cms

Looking for one that does not mean we have to do seperate installs of the cms...so the system will have one cms and we can then manage 100 sites using it.

The site can all have a similar theme and be on same ip.

Doug

Joomla can be setup like that, bit of a ball ache to do but its possible.

You would be better creating a bespoke solution to do exactly what you need.

Haven't set it up myself yet but I think you can use Wordpress MU in this way Doug.

seconded here, think Wordpress MU with domain mapping allows you to do this

WPMu does allow you to do this.

I'm running multiple sites on a single IP via WPMu and have been doing so since May or June '09 without any major problems.

It's a bit awkward to get it all set up, but when it's up and running it's great and it's pretty straightforward to keep it running, add new services etc.. Only thing you need to do is make sure you backup the database - if it corrupts then the whole thing would fall over (hasn't happened to me touch wood, but the whole install runs on one DB, and a rogue plugin / upgrade etc could do this).

Also, when you get used to it, then it's very flexible to tweak it for SEO etc.

I use Blue Host for my mini sites and get 100 Mysql DB with the package and nearly Unlimited everything with a fair use policy.

Just got an email saying please reduce your file count from 230'000 to below 50'000.

WHAT!

I thought fair do's I'll give it a go deleting old themes, plugins, domains that are dead etc.

Got it down to an impressive 170'000.

Which made me think how many files in a WP install? 800+ with no extra plugins, themes, pages, posts, images etc which equals to at least 80'000 files straight off.

Never seen or heard about a max file count before more expecting a GB usage.

What do you think and have you come across a file count MAX before?

Cheers

GDG

@GDG Can't imagine why that should be unless they do file system journaling or something?

BLUEHOST
50,000 files is a Target Performance Goal. We are requiring accounts to be under 200,000 files in order to have full account accesses, but the files would need to be maintained under such to avoid automated deactivation. 50,000 is just a Target Performance Goal.

Phew....... thank goodness for that. :D

To be honest, I am using free hosting service. Everything seems fine save the nagging pop up issues and nothing else. Anyone else here using free hosting service.

That might be useful for me - for SEO purposes. Where do I get it ?

Most browsers block pop-ups anyway so don't see that as a big problem. Is there anything else such as footer links etc ?

One of the companies I sold a domain too, emailed me today to say their host has limited SQL databases to 100mb on their package, and next one up is 250mb limit, that could be a major hassle.

The Photohosting site has almost 1gb of mysql and grows at about 100mb a month.

The price is definitely attractive in the US but Hostgator comply with US law not UK law which is a concern for me.

One of my UK VPS is £200 a month or £1800 a year, 2ghz Proc, 2gb Ram, 100gb Disk, 1tb b/width, Hostgator £55-65 for the same deal.

Their TOS has a few concerns for me, it uses terms like shared, reseller and dedicated but no mention of VPS, altho support tells me I can interpret VPS as Dedicated but I would want that clarifying before I signed up.

Their standard hosting packages are WAAAAAY to restrictive, but their VPS look interesting.

Just on a side note, anyone had any experience of running a server from home?

For some of my own websites:

Site5 - for several years, have a reseller account
Dreamhost - hmmm, simply because I have it

Clients:

Anything from shared hosting and VPS to dedicated (including one with a server-farm)

Not from home, but from office - yes. Client's connection was SDSL (from Zen). I was running their Webmail (Kerio Server) on a Fedora box. Also one of the corporate minisites.

1 potential problem with this is that a lot of mail blacklists will include known residential IP ranges so you could have trouble with SPAM filtering.

You will also need to check your ISP's T&C's as it may be forbidden.

Unless you have very low traffic volumes, things will slow down quite quickly unless you shell out for a fast link.

Could go on for hours with reasons why not, but if you want to go ahead, then I'd suggest getting a pair of routers and creating a DMZ between your home network and the ADSL/Cable router and hang your server off a subnet on the DMZ or put in some very strict firewall rules.

For a development box, then I'd suggest it was feasible, for production, I'd think again and either rent a server or a bit of co-lo space for your own server.

Cheers guys, I was always wondering if it was possible but from your advice it sounds like best just to pay for a dedicated or virtual server.

I'm on a dedicated server at the minute and paying around £130 a month, the server is good but I'm looking for something better. Contract ends in around a month so looks like I'll need to look around as well. On with tagadab at the minute, thought they would try to keep my custom but they didn't seem to bother.:-(
