Google Instant ... big big change

im sure this has been here for ages
we're talking about predictive text, yeah?

it certainly has for the search box in tool bar. definitely
about the extra grey letters after the ones you just typed in search box, i dont get that signed out
just the drop down choices
maybe they want you to be signed in to record your preferences? for their own ends, or to sell to market research
think a lot of people who dont use net loads will have head down typing looking at keyboard tbh anyway
those who are mega users know what we want anyway, with search

like someone said earlier, useful for searching for domains :D

what would everyone say are the 2 best things and 2 worst things about it

your not seeing it then mate, its not just the box of suggestions, the whole page changes as you type. i.e the results, ppc ads, etc so if i type , rugby it will show rugby results but then as soon as I type rugby ball it will change to show results for that etc

ah, must need to sign in then max :D
i'll try later
sounds like it could be monster monster

as much as getting your site top will be even more imp. for term, i would say easy to remember short url has never been more important then?

looks like it likes plurals over non plural in it's suggestion box ....that's going to annoy a lot of site owners

getting your site top will be even more imp. for term

Unless your in position 1 or 2 chances are your listing won't show above the fold the keyword suggestion box is so big, then there's three ads, then a map...

Time to start looking at ppc again:(

All I get is the drop down list of words when I'm typing a search term in, I hardly ever notice the drop down as I just type in the search term and hit enter.

I'm never signed in to Google so don't get the list of results for Hampton Court if I were to start to type "Hamp" like Dave pointed out earlier in the topic, or changing page like max suggested as you type, personally I don't think it makes any difference at all, certainly not to anything I search for anyway, I assume plenty of other people are the same and just type the full words they are searching for anyway.

[edit]

Now logged in to Google and still dont get the page changing as I type anything, perhaps it depends on browser, I use Opera and it's just the usual static page of results until you enter the new search query and hit enter, incidentally, the Google keyword tool does not work in Opera at all, wont even load.

nowt for me either - time will tell

also noted their static logo is really 'in your face' far less subtle than previously

All`s not lost we gotta see the positive in the negative

its makes the top 3 or 4 organic positions `s become more valuable

so seo its more critical than ever dont you think frank and yes it will force more to ppc

it all depends on how the statistics show whether the user will like it or not

how will it affect google new

opps there i go again hitting the send button accidentally

has anyone seen how it affects geo listings hold lets see

so "granite worktops london" mm it dont look pretty as i dont think users will like it

as it does not look informative it looks to much like sales pitch and

not like stuff you want to see Google have been desperate in trying to gain more revenue recently like getting off line business on line and now this its all for the share

price and not for customer experience i actually think this will put users off Google

if only 20 % of users previously clicked on pay per click adds then this is there attempt

to increase this figure and is not really what the user wants this is just a experiment

like lots of googles previous failed experiments that get pulled when they see there stats

slipping ,Google are messing about with the relevancy of there search over earnings and i think the public will see through this and it will turn them off using google

its just my opinion

Steve and others who have contacted me asking questions, and expressing their concerns - I will make a blog post tommorow, highlighting my thoughts and answering some of the myths already being circulated - it's not all bad ;)

I'm curious as to what it does to the search volumes, if nothing else. Does each return by Google Instant count as a search? If so then they are going to (falsely) increase dramatically. For example, searching for "mortgage". M returns msn, mo returns monsoon, mor returns morrisons, mort, mortg, mortga, mortgag return mortgage calulator, it is only when I hit return on mortgage do I get the results I want. In the meantime have I just added 1 (and everyone else that searches for mortgage) to the search counter for msn, monsoon, morrisons, mortgage calculator etc??

It even returns typos when there are none. Try searching for bridge, it will suggest you are looking for bridgfords..

From a user perspective, my first impressions are that it is annoying / distracting.
I have normally decided my search term before I start typing so this doesn't change anything for me... However longer term I assume it will change the way people search.

I think it counts as an impression if the user pauses mid search for 3 seconds or more. So in your example if user pauses on mortg for 3 seconds then that gets counted.

I think Domain Seller has hit the nail on the head - there is simply too much happening on the page for this change to stop someone typing what they were going to type anyway.

However, I have noticed (without realizing until I read this thread) that I've started using the drop-down predictive results box rather than typing the full phrase - but that is probably because it is in my line of sight when typing in the search phrase.

Where did you get this info?

it was a question asked on the Q&A at the end of the google presentation/conference.

It was in terms of impressions for ads, but i guess it'll still be for term count too

i would say vast majority of online users look at keyboard when typing?
would you agree?
those that don't (good typists) spend far more time online and know exactly what they want and are more savvy

Yowser, just found it on the video (go to 58:00 to see it). An impression is counted if there is a 3 second pause, or a click on the search button, or a click on anything on the page. They obviously view it as something that will change the search numbers, as they state it will change the CTR (but not the actual number of clicks).
