Fire sales lately

Fair enough, as a brand owner myself, ranking at the top for almost all products sold, I can understand, as I wouldn't expect any keyword match domains to get close without a lot more effort than a pop-up site.

This goes back to what I was saying earlier about .org.uk losing their value dramatically and .co.uk still retaining the prices. If .co.uk and .org.uk rank the same and LongTailKeyword.co.uk is only good for an SEO play/spam site/unbrandable - what's the advantage in having the .co.uk and why is it worth so much £ in comparison to the .org.uk?

For those that will completely miss what I'm saying. I'm not referring to single word / brandable .co.uk or even big keyword .co.uk that will work as a brand. I'm talking low search / long tail .co.uk keyword domains.

Should BestOnlineCasino.org.uk be worth the same as the co.uk then?, since it's a pure keyword domain.

That's not directly being asked at you Redemption, it's @everyone.

It'll be worth more - but again its one of the few niches that are both high value and not dominated by brands.

A lot of that extra value comes from getting a 'spare' domain (ie bestonlinecasino.uk) so that when the inevitable happens and you get penalised, you can have another try at it.

If I had £12,000 sitting here doing nothing and wanted to invest it in a domain, would I buy bestonlinecasino.co.uk? No, absolutely not.

But there are scenarios where I would consider it -

- If I had a site earning good money on the .org.uk version, I might re-brand.

- If I was worried about the .org.uk getting penalised and it was earning good £, I might build out the .co.uk

- If I saw that phrase bring in good/well converting traffic to one of my other sites yet my visibility was low, I might risk it.

- If I was in the niche in general, had partners paying good £ for the leads and in turn was making enough from my other sites to justify the £12k investment, probably yes.

But all of the above applies to a very specific buyer in an extremely lucrative niche. As I said earlier, I don't think one long tail keyword domain sale should set the market value of other domains.

You could post a domain up in appraisals, people would say it's worthless yet if somebody was dead-set on acquiring it for their brand name - they'd no doubt drop a few grand on it if there pockets were deep enough but does that make that particular domain *worth* a few grand on the open market? Probably not.

well their obviously doing 'somethign' right and happy for customers to see they are just a 'poor little' .org.uk company that can't afford the .co.uk

as a side note ref. Edwin's study on electrickbikes/adwords one wonders if keyword stuffed .org.uk might have some last ditch legs purely for adwords campaign boosts

Not sure what you're implying? That it's still possible to rank .org.uk?

The Electric Bikes study is fairly dated and Google have since updated AdWords to stop people doing exactly what is being described in the study. The same as they have the organic SERPs. I'm not saying the EMD won't help, but it isn't in the top 3 metrics when it comes to setting a PPC quality score.

I would have liked to see how a domain such as ElectricBikesUK.co.uk or whatever compared as opposed to Keyword.co.uk against OffTopic.co.uk. Not really fair test.

As for the .org.uk usage, if the EXACT keyword does have a significant benefit you'd have to test it against the .me.uk or even .co also to see how it would compare.

They do own the .co.uk - it is used as a seperate website and ranks bottom of page 1 in the above page link.

ya I know I was being ironic ;)

My point being I'm not sure users care too much about the url in some cases.

Just to be clear...

The Adwords changes only affect the ability to test URLs against each other in the same ad group. That means that my study's setup cannot be replicated as-is today.

Nothing Google has done should affect the effect of having the exact match domain, because the CTR boost was never down to algorithmic factors but to searcher psychology, something that Google (for once!) doesn't control...

CarLoans.com.au is a great domain, as is CarLoans.co.uk and CarLoans.com - These are more than keyword domains, they're a combination of both keyword and brandable which is fantastic. My issue is with CarLoansForNewDrivers.co.uk or CarLoansForPoorCredit.co.uk or whatever other longtail nonsense people are sticking an £X,XXX price tag on just because people search for it in Google.

Don’t be so modest. Since I know you, you had great success at domain catching. Even before I got in at 2002 you been hoovering up top domains for some time with little or no competition.

I been exploring some of those communities myself, but I have no intention getting in one just yet :) I always believed you lived in something like that already in Cornwall.

So now you not considering doing similar things on internet you done up to now, while living there?

Max, you're mixing me up with someone else, I didn't start with domains until Oct 2008 when I joined Acorn, and I only got my own tag in 2009. I wish I could hoover up some top domains though

Oh yes, sorry. There are some similarities in your user names.
