Domainlore charging 5%

Domainlore a business. Pretty smart model and he has been patient not monetising it much more before now and playing on dreamers when he does.

Its no different a model to many businesses. Build up the traffic then monetise it.

And everyone uses a system for free that they could not be bothered to create...........wow do people moan lots

I don't mind it personally. However, I do mind companies adding this sort of thing when they don't tell anyone and just stick it in their terms without updating people.

That's dishonest.

I will agree on that....Seems odd thing that has been done.....maybe a mistake???

My account is now locked because I am refusing to pay a 10% fee Denys is trying to charge me for a spotlight auction when the terms and even the pop up before submitting the auction advised I would be charged 5%.

The overall quality of the names on there over the last month is poor, odd exception but few top top names anymore. I visited the ukbackorder and you can see that, and this forum has improved in volume and quality.

It was never free - you had to pay £5 to list a gem and you lost it if the domain didn't sell - it has always made money, but the terms kinda changed in an semi-underhand way. I've always used DL - but I've been very busy recently and my account is now locked as I didn't have time to pay.

It's a very odd way to do business with a trusted seller like myself with 100+ reputation.

If you're mostly doing B2B stuff what's wrong with selling domains here? I've sold half a dozen in the last few weeks with no issue at all - there seems to be some misperception your going to get more on DL or miss out - at the end of the day a shit domain that no one wants is a shit domain no one wants - sticking it in hidden gems is just a form of turd polishing, that your having to pay for and still no one wants it!

I'd like to see bids starting from £1 for say hidden gems or a new lower category

+1 for this suggestion. Tried to reduce an auction starting price on a domain last week but found you can only increase it!

I’ve been trying to list on Domainlore all week...Instead I keep getting the message:

'Hidden Gems' auctions section is currently limited to 60 running auctions to reflect our 'quality over quantity' approach. Please start your auction later as more space becomes available.

Looking at the quality of the hidden gems it’s flooded with low quality .uk which won’t sell never mind the 5%

The spotlight auctions contains only .uk names that Denys caught (ROR 2nd auction).

Has .uk finally killed off Domainlore ? Time for a new auction platform ?

I think for fear it's not getting as many eyes

If I put an auction on there and it got a bad price id be annoyed at myself and think I should have put in on DL

My last few DL auctions I've been disappointed with the price though so maybe I need to start blaming my valuations :p

All the big bidders are aware of my site. Of course if there's nothing there that's good nobody will bother. But better to have more passers-by that don't bother eh :) 'We need another auction place....we're not using another auction place'. That's why it's free - use it or don't use it. Of course there's always sedo auctions, or namejet, and I'm sure there's more if people *really* want to use another place...Ebay? godaddy?

I have seen many names go very cheap on DL too. That's the nature of the beast.

You always see the same names bidding on DL and most of those are on Acorn so... Most are also on UKbackorder too.

The problem is in the design and user experience of the existing platforms.

Domainlore is now 10 years old:

https://web.archive.org/web/20090531072026/http://domainlore.co.uk/

While it has the best interface it is still not mobile responsive (for today’s devices) and it is now flooded with .uk (most of them caught by the owner).

There needs to be a new platform which has the mobile responsiveness and design of say Dan.com but has the eye balls of Domainlore. The only way you will get that is if it’s community led and you get people to list good names on there.

The different extensions .co.uk and .uk also need separating out in to different tabs. There is also a difference between recent “drop caught” auctions and older premium auctions.

UKbackorder.com has the right idea but again it’s not mobile friendly and limited by recent drop caught names.

Well I could spend time and money creating a mobile version but, as people have already stated, they would probably not use it anyway. So go for it... there's a gap in the market (well the free market anyway) :) A mobile version is on my list of things to do but I need to focus at the moment on things that earn. Of course Denys doesn't need to do a thing - people will complain but still use it anyway. If my site is *limited* by caught auctions it's because that what the site actually is - backorder/catch/auction. The free public auctions were only added as an afterthought after people requested them... then some didn't use them at the time anyway. However if you produce something for the community that fulfils all the criteria you want I'm happy to remove the public auctions altogether to avoid conflict.

I don't get offended - it just bemuses me when people complain but don't resolve. I agree that we need a new auction place with lots of traffic. But the reason there isn't one is simply because people wouldn't use it to *get* the lots of traffic in the first place. Also to be fair you have NO idea how much traffic my site gets so 'factual information' is not really factual is it? Oh sorry - I'm getting offended :p Also the uk market is a tiny fraction of the money and volume of domain sales so how much money would people really need to spend to create a site that people want to use for free and have lots of visitors?
