I am proud to bits for the Domain Summit Europ 2025 to have Richard Lau

, a serial entrepreneur, domain pioneer, and core investor in Titan Research

, return to us this year! From Canada, this chap’s a proper icon with a tale that’s as rich as a full English breakfast and twice as compelling.
It all began in the mid-’90s when Richard was mired in Canada’s paging scene. A mate scarpered to launch an internet dial-up gig, and pals nabbed IceCream.com, piquing his interest. In 1996, he and a friend snapped up auto-dealer domains, only for Microsoft to ring with a $9,500 offer - scuppered by a trademark hitch, but it lit a fire that’d soon blaze across the domain world.
By the late ’90s, he’d turned curiosity into a cracking enterprise - DomainsDirect.com undercut ISPs with a “free for mates” twist, a clever landing page crossing out $19.95 for a nought-cost search. It blossomed into YourNameFree.com and NamesDirect, climbing to a top-30 registrar. By 2001, he’d merged with NameZero and nabbed MyDomain.com, a free DNS titan hosting 500K domains, before a whirlwind of business moves and tax woes saw him regroup with renewed focus in California.
Crowned “Domainer of the Year” in 2004 at TRAFFIC, Richard’s minted millions since. He cooked up NamesCon in 2012 on Rick Schwartz’s forum - a virtual lounge where he practically lived, soaking up tips like a sponge. Launched in 2014, it became the domain world’s crown jewel - think back-to-back meetings, breakfast trades (he once swapped domains over bacon!), and WaterSchool fundraisers - before selling to WorldHostingDays in 2017. Now owned by Opus Origin, a major UK media and events investor, it’s thriving in new hands. Resume.com went to Indeed, helping job seekers aplenty, and Logo.com - his latest triumph - boasts 10M+ logos via a bespoke generator, ditching clunky third-party kit for a streamlined win.
Enter Titan Research, a UK domain name data outfit led by COO Cosmin Elefterescu. Their Domain Name Intelligence API dishes out real-time domain intel for businesses and organisations - ownership, risks, the full monty. The Domain Name Management Service is a smashing all-in-one for taming big portfolios, from renewals to analytics. They’ve sunk hefty sums into tailored software, honed over years to manage and boost their own portfolio and clients’, giving a proper edge in efficiency and growth.
Richard’s domain exploits are the stuff of legend - he’s wrestled RL.com back (a legal slog costing more than its worth), saved God.com and Iraq.com, and rues letting Weed.com slip cheap in 2008 at auction, a regret shared by every domainer in that room. His portfolio’s thousands deep - two-word .coms for steady cash, plus gems like Logo.com - his darling for its category-defining fit - and Face.com, now at $10M after he swatted a $1M bid, eyeing its future in tech or a personal startup.
In 2002, after a dizzying run of ventures and tax hits, he rebooted with $5K in credit, flipping domains like a seasoned punter - mining GoTo.com for keywords, tracking owners with skip-tracing nous (cheers to a detective book), and charming deals with cheeky calls - “Richard from Canada here!” He’s since shaped crypto ventures, kept Domain Manager free for domainers, and built a legacy of tenacity and innovation that’s pure Lau.
Titan Research pulls it all together - Elefterescu’s product savvy (ex-Deepcrawl, Palantir) pairs with Richard’s domain mastery to push digital identity solutions. They’re not just managing domains; they’re crafting how brands secure their online patch in a wild digital frontier, from APIs sniffing out threats to dashboards taming portfolio chaos - a brilliant blend of 25+ years’ hustle and forward-thinking tech.
Richard’s heart is as big as his ambition - he’s raised over $500K for WaterSchool via WaterNight, leading as Executive Director to bring clean water to Uganda and Kenya since 2007. He’s a Women in Domaining cheerleader, an ICA champ, and a networker who once sorted a deal over barbecue at his gaff. A fan of Chinese grub, 60s pop, Orwell’s 1984, and the gentle click of snooker balls, he fancies a go at astronomy or tickling the ivories if domains ever fade.
Expect a talk that’s an absolute belter - Richard will unpack 25+ years of domain evolution (from $75 flips to $10M asks), branding brilliance (Logo.com’s 10-minute magic), and digital identity’s future with Titan Research. He’ll spill on RL.com’s legal wrangle, NamesCon’s breakfast-deal glory and its Opus Origin era, and why he’d build on Face.com over cashing out. A must for domain buffs, brand experts, and innovators - pure gold from a pioneer!
